WAIMEA — Residents are invited to get their bodies moving between 5 and 7 p.m. April 21 at Waimea Elementary School’s Bronco Dancers charity event in Thelma Parker Gym. Certified Zumba instructors Shelia Kinzer, Renee Morinaka, Suelang Watson and Kehaulani Marshall will lead the dance fitness workouts.
Dance Fitness booths will include food, crafts, baked goods and silent auction items. The Bronco Dancers will also perform that night. Event proceeds will help fund flights, hotel rooms and meals for the Bronco Dancers team, enabling them to participate in the JUMP Dance Convention June 1 on Oahu.
“The convention is a three-day event in which dancers can take classes from instructors from around the world,” WES teacher Megan Minotti said, who also leads the Bronco Dancers team. “Classes are offered in varied dance disciplines and are designed to be mentally and physically challenging with the goal of improving a dancer’s physicality, musicality and ability to learn choreography. By attending this dance convention, my dancers will get to experience high-quality dance education and will be surrounded by same-aged dancers from around the world.”
She continued, “Our island doesn’t offer these kinds of opportunities, so the biggest issue in taking advantage of such an opportunity is getting to the convention which is very expensive. My school is a Title 1 school so these financial challenges produce hard obstacles for families wanting their dancer to progress. Nevertheless, my dancers are ready to hustle to turn this dream into reality.”
Minotti hopes her dance group will one day become a team that performs for charities, competes in state and national competitions and brings pride and accolades to their school and community.
“My dancers are hungry for more and I feel a duty to seek any and every opportunity there may be to feed their desire to dance,” she concluded.
