Friends of the Children of West Hawaii looking for board members
The 30-year-old organization Friends of the Children of West Hawaii is seeking volunteers to join its Board of Directors. The group works to ensure that the youth of our community have the resources necessary to enjoy the experience of childhood and grow into healthy leaders while also reducing instances of abuse, neglect, and at-risk behaviors.
Volunteers must commit to attending a 90-minute board meeting once each month, as well as volunteering roughly 10 hours per month (either individually or working with a group).
Current programs include the Enhancements and Basic Needs program for children in need, the Supply Our Students school supply drive, the annual Keiki Christmas Project, and the “You’ve Got A Friend Bag” program for children being removed from their home by Child Welfare Services.
Anyone can serve on the board, however Friends of the Children of West Hawaii is seeking a financial professional, a legal professional, a medical professional, and an adolescent mental health professional to join our board, a these points of view are integral to the management of the organization and effective services for our clients.
There are currently two seats open with terms ending June 30, 2020, and five seats open with terms ending June 30, 2019.

Tante Urban donates to Kona Dance
Tante Urban donated $1,000 to Kona Dance and Performing Arts from his foundation, Tante and Araceli Urban Foundation, a 501(c)3 that was established in 2016.
The foundation’s mission is to promote and support education, culture, and the arts, as well as charitable causes. Kona Dance and Performing arts is a 501(c)3 based in Kealakekua striving to provide high quality education and instruction in dance and performing arts to local youth and the Big Island community.
The foundation raises funds through annual fundraisers and events in order to provide financial assistance to intellectually gifted and talented students in Hawaii studying athletics, culture, arts, and music.
Ka’u Coffee Festival gears up
The 10th annual Ka’u Coffee Festival celebrates its award-winning brew with java-jumping fun starting April 21 and culminating May 5-6 with the popular, day-long hoolauleaa and coffee college educational series.
Supported by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and a host of community sponsors and volunteers, the Ka’u Coffee Festival is designed to celebrate Ka’u as a premium coffee growing origin and a unique visitor destination.
Many events are free, while others require a nominal fee and reservations. All activities feature the exceptional flavor and aroma of Ka’u coffee and the remarkable people and special place that produces it.
