Donkey Mill announces a new art exhibit

Donkey Mill Art Center is proud to announce its latest exhibition, Wa Ma Mua / Wa Ma Hope: Navigating the Future With the Past, which frames Hokulea and the Malama Honua Movement. Guest curator Mina Elison worked with guidance from DMAC cultural advisor Kumu Keala Ching and artistic advisor Hiroki Morinoue to present items crafted by Gary Eoff, Ed Kaneko and David Reisland.

In the Hawaiian language, “ka wa ma mua” describes “the time which has gone before” or “the past.” Presented within the context of traditional Hawaiian values in the form of five proverbs, this thoughtful exhibition demonstrates the sustainable practices and beliefs of kupuna and challenges the viewer’s perception of what the future can be.

The exhibition will be on view in the gallery at Donkey Mill Art Center from April 14 through June 23. The public is invited to experience the exhibition for the first time at a free potluck grand opening with no-host bar from 6-8 p.m. April 14. The Donkey Mill Art Center is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Kona Choral Society to perform spring concert

Kona Choral Society, under the direction of artistic director Susan McCreary Duprey, presents its spring concert at 4 p.m. May 19 at the Hale Hoaloha Pavilion at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows. With a 28-year tradition of providing excellent choral music to the Kona and Hawaii Island community, the 100-plus-voice chorus, along with four multitalented local soloists, and a 30-person orchestra, presents W.A. Mozart’s Requiem.

World-renowned conductor Joseph Flummerfelt will be the guest conductor at the spring concert. The Grammy award-winning maestro was named Musical America’s 2004 conductor of the year, and in 2016 he retired from 44 years of choral preparation for the New York Philharmonic.
