Historical society promotes Miculka
Kona Historical Society named Gavin Miculka director of interpretation to lead the museum’s historical interpretation initiatives. He advanced from his previous position as assistant program director and museum farm manager.
Miculka joined the Kona Historical Society in 2014 with a background in heritage tourism and living history, an undergraduate degree in recreation, park and tourism sciences with an emphasis in natural resource management from Texas A&M as well as a master’s degree in applied anthropology from the University of Maryland with an emphasis in heritage tourism and historic preservation.
“Gavin has done so much for Kona Historical Society over the past three years — the peaceful and beautiful gardens at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm, the engaging kids’ programming, and the wonderful Hawaii Tourism Authority partnered ‘Hands on History’ cultural activities have immensely increased the quality and value of our programming to visitors under his leadership,” said Kona Historical Society Executive Director Joy Holland.
“I hope that our sites will become venues for kupuna, cultural practitioners, and other community members to talk story, lead programs, and share Kona’s history with friends, visitors, and especially Kona’s youth,” Miculka added.
Army contractor meeting Wednesday
A free informational session is being held from 1-3:30 p.m. Wednesday to any business or contractor who wants to learn about federal construction contracting opportunities becoming available at the Pohakuloa Training Area.
It will be at the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Meeting Hale, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway and Q&A opportunities will be available to meet representatives from the supporting organizations and U.S. Army Garrison – Pohakuloa.

Lanai Kona’s newest brew
Kona Brewing Co. announced Thursday the latest addition to its Aloha Series with Gold Cliff IPA, which it described as a bold, juicy beer that highlights the adventurous spirit of the Hawaiian Islands by playing homage to the southern tip of Lanai, where the island’s first pineapple field overlooks cobalt blue waters.
Kona Brewing Co.’s Gold Cliff IPA will launch nationally May 7.
