KAILUA-KONA — A 69-year-old man died Tuesday after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a guardrail on Mamalahoa Highway in North Kona.

The man was operating a Kona-bound motorcycle when he apparently left the roadway and stuck a guardrail in the vicinity of mile marker 29 on the makai side of the highway, also known as Highway 190, according to the Hawaii Police Department. The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. and did not prompt a road closure.

The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was transported in stable condition to Kona Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead several hours later, police said.
