Kahilu Theatre presents show with Lucky Tongue
Capturing the idealist dreams of a famed generation, a new musical performance by Lucky Tongue will debut at the Kahilu Theatre at 7 p.m. May 23. “My Generation” is a rock and roll show featuring music of the 1960s and offers inspiration from iconic songs such as Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” and The Mamas &The Papas’ “California Dreaming.” The creators of the show hope to establish a new connection of the past with today’s audiences. Lucky Tongue toured for eight years across the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada and Mexico before deciding their home would be the Big Island. The three core members of the group are family members Dylan Ward on percussion, Blade Ward on lead guitar and Blaine Ward on bass and harmonica. Performing with them at Kahilu Theatre will be internationally acclaimed British guitarist Robin Le Mesurier, who has toured with Rod Stewart and Jimmie Hallyday. Also joining them are Linnea Minbiole on cello, and Waimea’s own Scotty Nelson on keyboards, as well as dancers and backing vocalists Ireland and Gillian Ward, and Marlena and Sabrina Jeffrey.

Art-After-Dark is this Friday at Holualoa Village
This Friday, Holualoa Village again celebrates art, music and food, with First Friday Art-After-Dark. This month’s event is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. May 4. The all-ages event features art and artists in over a dozen galleries and shops, as well as free live music and a great selection of local food vendors.
At Holualoa Gallery, artists and owners Matthew and Mary Lovein will be present, along with featured artist William Wingert painting live. Next to the gallery, Kona Dogs Gourmet Street Food will provide culinary delights. John-E Collins will be performing live out front.
Glyph Art Gallery will be featuring new dimensional paintings by Christina Skaggs, oils by Lisa Bunge and hand painted silk by Jeri Baumgardner, with Sundog Bread in front of the gallery.
At opposite ends of the village, Always Rippin’ David Lawrence rocks Koa Realty, and the Mauka High Notes will be entertaining at Holualoa Ukelele Gallery, with their Hawaii-focused songbook.

Lei making at SKEA
There will be a lei making workshop at the Society for Kona’s Education &Art from 1-4 p.m. May 12.
Please bring flowers, ti leaf, or anything except ohia. Cost is $12 for SKEA members and $15 for non-members. SKEA is located at 84-5191 Mamalahoa Highway in Honaunau, South Kona.

‘The Fairy Doll’ ballet comes to Kahilu Theatre
Doneva Ballet School will present its first full-length ballet, “The Fairy Doll” at 7 p.m. May 11 at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. Under the artistic direction of Youlia Doneva, the dancers, ages three to adult, will share a fanciful tale of one special toy shop, a fairy doll and her delightful, doll companions who come to life. In beautiful costumes from countries around the world, the dancers will fill the stage with beauty and talent as they present a tailored version of this classical ballet first performed in 1888. The show is appropriate for families. Tickets are on sale for $15 through the school.

Goochey the Kailua Village Artists featured artist in May
The Kailua Village Artists featured artist for the month of May is jewelry artist Gigi Goochey.
All of the artist’s jewelry is handmade by Goochey on the Island of Hawaii. She uses sterling silver and gold in all her jewelry pieces and incorporates gemstones; as well as, shells and coral that were found here locally by the artist. She has lived in Captain Cook for 27 years with her husband and two sons that were born and raised on the island. She started her jewelry business, “Designs by Giglia,” in 2000.
Meet and talk with the artist when she will be working at the Kailua Village Artists Gallery May 3, May 10 and May 28. The KVA Gallery is located at 75-5729 Alii Drive, Suite C-110 in the Kona Marketplace, in Kailua-Kona. The gallery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Wax pastels workshop at Volcao Art Center
Explore new art techniques using wax pastels with artist Esther Szegedy on from 9 a.m. to noon May 5 at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.
In the “Bringing it to Life (Make Your Colors Glow)” workshop, you’ll create your own two dimensional piece of artwork using nontoxic wax based pastel crayons on black pastel paper with a velvety surface.
Szegedy is a professional children’s books illustrator and author, with experience in both the educational and trade books fields.
Cost for the workshop is $45 and $40 for VAC Members plus a $10 supply fee per person. Beginner and intermediate artists are welcome.

Ka’u Coffee Fest marks 10th year
The 10th annual Ka’u Coffee Festival is this weekend, with newly crowned Miss K’au Coffee Reishalyn Kekoa Jara of Na’alehu presiding at a host of events.
The Ka’u Coffee Festival Hoolaulea is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Pahala Community Center and the Ka’u Coffee College on Sunday.
Attendees can browse among local food, coffee, crafts, product and informational booths while enjoying barista-guided coffee tastings. Admission is free. Guided coffee farm tours with van transport are $20.
At 9 a.m. Sunday, The Ka’u Coffee College features local and visiting coffee industry experts offering seminars focused on enhancing coffee quality and best farm management techniques.
All activities are open to the public.

New executive director joins the Donkey Mill Art Center ohana
Donkey Mill Art Center is proud to announce the hire of an executive director. Following a nationwide search, Maja Clark joined the staff of the Mill on April 16. A longtime Honolulu resident, Maja has spent the last three years leading the Collection Information &Digital Assets team at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in providing staff and public access to LACMA’s art collection through its collection management database, digital asset management system and website.
“It is an honor, humbling, and thrilling, to join the Mill’s staff and community. I believe that helping people is its own reward and having fun along the way is a healthy choice with huge impact. The role of cultural institutions large and small is essentially the same: to provide refuge as safe spaces to create, listen, respond to the needs and nourish the growth of a community,” Clark said in a press release.
Donkey Mill Art Center is open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
