Evacuation of Leilani Estates, Lanipuna Gardens ordered as lava erupts; shelter opens

HILO — A mandatory evacuation of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens subdivisions has been ordered after lava was confirmed to have erupted from a crack in Mohala Street.

Hawaii County Civil Defense has ordered everyone residing to the east of Luana Street in Leilani Estates to evacuate the area. An evacuation point has been established at Pahoa Regional Community Center.

The American Red Cross is opening a shelter at the Pahoa Community Cetner for residents evacuated from their hyomes because of the lava threat. The center is at 15-3022 Kauhale St. in Pahoa.
