WAIMEA — American Savings Bank, Hawaii Electric Light and Pacific Current — Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI) companies — awarded a $50,000 grant to North Hawaii Community Hospital last week that will go towards the emergency room renovation and expansion project.

The ER facility handles an increasing number of emergency visits for patients throughout North Hawaii. Planning has begun for the renovation and expansion of the hospital’s existing emergency room. The renovation will require a total of $25 million.

The new emergency room will house 13 multi-use rooms with 11 private and two trauma; an expanded centralized nurses work station; new ambulance and patient/family entry points; a new waiting room; and other support spaces for emergency services, allowing the delivery of care in a family- and patient-centered environment. Currently the ER has six multi-use rooms.

“We greatly appreciate and thank American Savings Bank, Hawaii Electric Light and Pacific Current for their generous support. It is through the commitment of businesses, foundations and individuals that we will be able to raise the funds needed to complete the project, making a difference in our community,” said Cindy Kamikawa, NHCH’s president.
