Construction on Henry Street next week

KONA — The County of Hawaii Department of Public Works Traffic Division will be installing the striping and traffic markings on the newly resurfaced portion of Henry Street from Palani Road to Queen Kaahumanu Highway. Work is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather and construction conditions permitting. No roadwork will occur on the weekend.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and to drive with caution as heavy vehicles will be in the work zone. Alternating lane closures will be in effect and travel in both directions will be provided at all times through the work area. Use alternate routes when possible. Special off-duty police officers will be posted in the area to facilitate traffic movement.

For questions or concerns, contact Barett Otani at 961-8787.

Kona Historical Society awarded $800K from Hawaii grants

Kona Historical Society was awarded two grants from the State of Hawaii Grant-in-Aid program for this upcoming fiscal year, including $600,000 to support the construction of the long-awaited Kona Museum.

The Capital Improvement Project Grant in Aid will help Kona Historical Society move forward with construction of a 19th-century style Kona ranch building, featuring a modern white cube gallery space, located alongside the historic H.N. Greenwell Store Museum in Kealakekua. This venue will allow Kona Historical Society to feature its own collections, as well as make the museum eligible for loaned exhibits through its relationships with other Hawaii State museums and affiliation with the Smithsonian Institute and its museums.

The second award of $200,000 for an Operational Grant in Aid, will help the Kona Historical Society support the upcoming large-scale exhibit, “E Hele Me Ka Puolo: Bring Your Gifts Wherever You Go,” inspired by the Olelo Noeau. The project will emphasize through significant museum and archival collections the important ethnic contributions in Kona.
