Firefighters douse small brush fire in North Kona

KAILUA-KONA — The timing was right Tuesday when a brush fire broke out in the Kaloko Light Industrial Area in North Kona.

Around 10:30 a.m., firefighters from the Makalei Fire Station were headed makai on Hina Lani Street when they noticed smoke rising from an area mauka of Costco, said Hawaii Fire Department Capt. Mark Evans. They called it in to dispatch and quickly steered the fire engine to the area.

Upon arriving at the scene of the fire, which was located off Maiau Street, above Kamanu Street, the firefighters found a small brush fire taking off in a vacant lot mauka of Kaloko Business Center V. They quickly positioned their hoses and knocked down the flames, ultimately extinguishing the blaze within about 45 minutes.

No injuries were reported and a road closure was not required. The fire burned about one-quarter acre.
