Spoken Art benefit event to be held June 2 at Umekes Fishmarket and Grill
Spoken Art, a benefit event that will be showcasing a collaboration between vocal and movement artists in effort to bring cultural awareness and unity through artistic expression, has moved to June 2 at Umekes Fishmarket and Grill Pa’ina Room.
This is a unique platform that not only brings young artists in the community together but also to provoke and challenge individuals to work in an environment outside of their comfort zones to expand their artistic and social abilities. It is in partnership with Ho’ola Na Pua, a nonprofit organization, dedicated to bringing awareness on underage sex trafficking here in Hawaii. The mission of Ho’ola Na Pua is the renewal of trafficked girls through health, education, advocacy, and reintegration. Their vision is to provide girls who are rescued or escape from the abuse of sex trafficking with a path to restoration and healing from their trauma, an increased sense of self-worth, and the confidence and ability to successfully reintegrate into their family and the community. All of the proceeds from this event will benefit this cause.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12.
Chamber Orchestra of Kona holding benefit concert
The Chamber Orchestra of Kona is performing a benefit concert with guest musician John Keawe for Memorial Day at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Resort Kaleiopapa Convention Center in Keauhou.
All profits will be donated to two veterans groups: The American Legion Post 20’s Homeless Veterans Assistance Program and the West Hawaii Veteran’s Cemetery Scattering Garden memorial project.
Music by the orchestra includes patriotic, memorial and military styles. John Keawe performs his slack key styling original pieces, and the orchestra will join him for selections of his music. Keawe’s wife, Hope, will join him in dancing hula to his popular “Beautiful Hula Dancer.”
Tickets are $10 or $20 for preferred seating, available at the door or online at www.chamberorchestraofkona.com/concerts. Children 18 and under free. All military and veterans are encouraged to wear uniforms and will be recognized.

Artist Norma Julia to be honored at Kona Arts Center
A reception honoring local artist Norma Julia will take place from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Kona Arts Center in the Keahou Shopping Center. There will be light pupus and Julia will be there to greet you.
Julia, retired veterinary assistant and housewife, decided to try watercolor painting around 1990. It has been a rewarding second career for her with the help of many fine artists. Some of those artists include: Pauline Turner, Gayle Anderson, Sachi Nifash, Uncle Bob and Auntie Carol Rogers and Annabel Spielman. She is very involved with The Kona Arts Center and Central Maine Art Gallery in Skowhegan, Maine.

Johnny Valentine playing show at Gertrude’s
Musician Johnny Valentine will be playing a show from 6:30-9:30 p.m. May 30 at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kailua-Kona.
Raised in Hawaii, Valentine has spent most of his life entertaining in the heart of Waikiki, eventually becoming one of the most sought after live musicians in the islands. Valentine was also a mentor to his sister’s son, Peter, also known as Bruno Mars.

Baroque music concert with Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble
Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble’s last concert of the 2017-2018 season is again dedicated to the period listeners love the most. From the late 16th to the mid 18th century, the Baroque period covers almost 200 years of European music history. Baroque composers also had the most influence on the following periods including and especially the 20th century.
The program will present the whole range of this exciting era with works by composers from the two most important countries, Germany and Italy. An archaic Canzona with rude harmonics, a Trio Sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach can be compared with an elegant Duetto Sonata by his Son Carl Philipp Emanuel. After more Italianità, the Great Georg Friedrich Händel will conclude the program with one of his incomparable Sonatas.
The first performance will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church at 77-165 Lako St. in Kailua-Kona. The second concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at a private residence in Kailua-Kona. Free admission, donations welcome.

Quilt Show deadline is approaching
Saturday is the deadline for online registration for Volcano Art Center’s second biannual Quilt Show, “Quilts in the Forest – Where the Path May Lead.” The exhibition opens July 13 and continues through Aug. 4 at VAC’s Ni‘aulani Campus. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The public is invited to the opening reception on from 5-7 p.m. July 13.
“Quilts in the Forest – Where the Path May Lead” is open to all full-time and part-time residents of the Island of Hawaii, whether they are amateur or professional quilters. This year’s show hopes to inspire quilters to explore new and innovative ways in quilting. The prospectus and entry forms are available online at http://volcanoartcenter.org/gallery/call-to-artists/.
On July 14, master quilter Roberta Muller will lead two classes, from 10 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m., on needleturn applique and basic Hawaiian quilting. The class is free, but there is a $10 fee for the quilting kit. Each class is limited to 10 students.
On July 28, there will be a pop-up fabric and fiber store in the front classroom at Hale Hoomana from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. where artists and crafters can sell their work. Table fee for participants is $35.
