LIHUE — A Kauai man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection to the 2006 death of his wife.

Darren Galas was sentenced Wednesday after pleading no contest in January to a felony assault charge.

Sandra Galas was found strangled in the garage of her home in February 2006.

Authorities say her estranged husband was the prime suspect, but police didn’t have enough evidence to arrest him at the time.

According to court documents, the two were married in 1999 and separated in 2005. Sandra Galas had asked for a divorce after the separation.

Darren Galas was indicted in October 2012. He had been charged with second-degree murder, but pleaded no contest to the lesser charge after reaching an agreement with prosecutors.
