Concert and art show to benefit residents affected by volcano
On Saturday, Daylight Mind Coffee Company in Kailua-Kona is hosting Kokua Puna benefit concert and art show from 6-10 p.m.
A $10 donation is suggested, and all funds and items will be donated to Pu’uhonua O’ Puna to benefit those affected by the ongoing Kilauea eruption.
Live music will be performed by artists such as Kimberly June, Lopaka Rootz and D. Ramos Band.
The event is open to those of all ages.

Ben Kaili to perform for Hui Kakoo benefit concert series
Keauhou Shopping Center presents acclaimed singer and slack key guitar master Ben Kaili at the Hui Kakoo benefit concert series at 5 p.m. June 30.
This event, sponsored by Kona Stories, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Royal Thai Cafe, Therapydia Kona, Blue Sea Artisans Gallery and Sea Paradise, will be held in the Kai Maloo Reef Stage area, in front of Longs Drugs.
Admission is two cans of food that will be donated to The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank. Bring more than two cans for a chance to win a prize from one of the concert sponsors.

Hawaiian Cultural Festival will be held June 23-24
On June 23 and 24, Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will host its annual Hawaiian Cultural Festival and celebrate the park’s 57th anniversary as a unit of the National Park Service.
On Saturday, June 23, activities will include canoe rides in Honaunau Bay, lauhala and coconut frond weaving, kapa beating, traditional lei making and more. On Sunday, June 24, the celebration continues with traditional Hawaiian foods tasting and hukilau (traditional fishing) demonstration. This year’s festival theme is Ua lehulehu a manomano ka ikena a ka Hawaii, meaning great and numerous is the knowledge of the Hawaiian.
The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, and is free. In order to protect fragile resources and preserve the historic setting, picnicking, coolers and chairs are not allowed in the royal grounds. No food is available in the park.

Documentary month at Volcano Art Center
The Volcano Art Center proudly presents Monday Movie Nights. Monday Movie Nights will take place weekly at 7 p.m. at VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. This intimate venue now features a digital projection system complete with digital cinema surround sound.
This June, the Volcano Art Center is pleased to present a collection of documentary films starting on June 11 with a film coinciding with the Volcano Art Center gallery exhibit, Na Loko Ia O Hawaii Nei: Fishponds Of Hawaii by Carol Araki Wyban. This short film highlights the topic of Hawaii’s fish ponds and will be supplemented with a presentation by artist Carol Araki Wyban and filmmaker Joan Lander.
On June 18, the film the Tea Explorer will screen for the first time on the Big Island. The Tea Explorer follows Jeff Fuchs as he travels from the tea forests of southwest China over the Himalayas and down through the magnificent Kali Gandaki Gorge into Kathmandu., the same path where the tea traders once carried their leaves to market on the backs of mules.
Antarctica: A Year On Ice will screen on June 25. This film by Kiwi filmmaker Anthony B. Powell chronicles a year of time spent living and working at remote stations in Antarctica. The film focuses on the everyday workers that keep the stations and the equipment running so the scientists can complete their work.

Figure drawing at Volcano Art Center
Artist Rose Adare will offer the “Inspired Figure Drawing” workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16 at Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
A variety of drawing techniques will be covered to give the artist fresh ways to view drawing.
Class fee is $65/$60 for VAC members plus a $10 model fee. Students are asked to bring a pen, notebook, drawing materials such as charcoal, pencil, erasers and a large pad of paper at least 11x 14.

Sales at two Maui receptions June 14 benefit evacuees
Big Island bronze sculptor Chris Barela will introduce a new, limited edition sculpture collection exclusive to Martin &MacArthur on Maui at two events June 14. Profits from sales of Barela’s bronze “Voyager” sea turtles will benefit Kilauea volcano evacuees.
A former professional surfer and Pipeline finalist who appeared on the cover of Surfing Magazine, Barela retired from the sport in the late 1980s and turned his love for the ocean into a career in sculpture. He resides in Waimea and has been sculpting for 25 years.

Sunny Pauole’s signature art selected for Coffee Cultural Festival
Kona-based artist Sunny Pauole’s signature art was recently selected as the winning image concept for the 2018 Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. Pauole was chosen after an open call for signature art for Hawaii artists to submit their original works of art in a competition.
Pauole created an original piece of art depicting the spirit of Kona’s world famous brew from the eye of the farmer. The winning graphic image will be used to promote the festival with an official event poster and for all official retail items including T-shirts and coffee cups.
Sunny Pauole’s work can be found in private and corporate collections. She studied at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, where she mastered mixed media and expanded her repertoire to include graphic design. She has evolved into a multi-media artist with an aesthetic balance of visual expression. Her imaginative creations have been featured on magazine covers, books and private Kona coffee labels. She has also been commissioned to paint original artwork and designed corporate logos.
Festival attendees are encouraged meet Sunny Pauole at various events throughout the 10-day Kona Coffee Cultural Festival happening Nov. 9-18.

Kahilu Theatre is seeking actors for South Pacific
Kahilu Theatre will be holding auditions for their upcoming production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific. The performances will be Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and 2. Rehearsals will be evenings and weekends and will begin in early August at the Kahilu Theatre.
The roles of Emile, Nellie, Bloody Mary, Cable and Captain Brackett have already been cast.
General auditions for the remainder of the cast will be held June 15 at the theatre. Auditions will be held for Ngana (≈ age 11) and Jerome (≈ age 8) will be begin at 5 p.m. Auditions for adults will begin at 6 p.m. Those auditioning are asked to prepare 16 bars of a song of your choice and be ready to learn a short dance routine.
