Maxi Priest to perform Sunday at Honokaa Peoples Theatre
Coming to The Big Island for a special “Fathers Day Dance Party,” reggae star Maxi Priest will be performing at the Honokaa Peoples Theatre at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Maxi Priest’s unique vision has led him to tremendous international success, being the first reggae artist to have a No. 1 hit worldwide. His latest album is “Easy To Love,” and the lead single, “Easy To Love,” was a No. 1 hit on the reggae charts.
Kicking of the dance party is special guest DJ Uplifter. Tickets are $45 for general admission, and $65 for gold circle seating. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

The Hawaiian Mission Houses History Theatre is coming to Kona
Hawaiian Mission Houses History Theatre will present “Opukaha‘ia” at historic Mokuaikaua Church at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Opuukaha‘ia is an opportunity to experiance culture and heritage across the generations. Learn about the events and times of Henry’s life that inspired the Sandwich Island Mission and the connection to present day Henry Street in Kona.
The program begins with an introduction to the historic landscape given by Neil Hitch, executive director of the Mission Houses and Opukaha‘ia relative, Deborah Lee. Actor Moses Goods will protray Henry, a history theatre character, who will tell his own story, and, as with all performances, a talk back with the audiance will follow.
This event is free and open to the public. This performance is sponsored by the following organizations: Kona Historical Society, Daughers of Hawaii, Hulihee Palace, University of the Nations and Mokuaikaua Church.

SKEA hosting magic camp
The Society for Kona’s Education &Art is hosting a five-day workshop with magicians Arnie Rabin and Barry Gitelson from 2-4 p.m. June 25-29.
The magic camp is for those age seven and up. Tuition is $75 for the week, or $65 for SKEA members, which includes all supplies. Register by Monday for a $10 discount.

The West Hawaii County Band announces next Free Friday concert
The West Hawaii County Band, a 20-piece wind band primarily comprised of community members, announces June Tunes, the next Friday concert of 2018, to be presented on at 6:30 p.m. June 15 sat Hale Halawai Park on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.
The West Hawaii County Band will present an hour of exciting wind band music including, but not limited to, music from the film Back to the Future and the great anthem Slava (Glory) by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In addition, the band will get into a jazz groove with The Symphonic Duke, a collection of tune by Duke Ellington including “Caravan,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” “Satin Doll,” “Mood Indigo” and closing with the swing classic “Take the ‘A’ Train.”

Free music concert at Kailua-Kona Library
Brian Nakasone and Kathy Fraser will hold a free concert at the Kailua-Kona Library from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on June 26.
Brian, who plays standard and slack-key guitar, is a prolific songwriter who performs regularly for local events throughout the year. Kathy, on cello, plays with various groups, and composes for cello and other instruments. Together, they team up to provide a variety of music, which includes everything from originals to familiar standards. Their music has been described as heartfelt and emotionally engaging.
This free event is hosted by Friends of the Libraries – Kona (F.O.L.K.), located at 75-138 Hualalai Rd.

Tickets for an evening with Judy Collins on sale
Singer-songwriter and folk music icon Judy Collins is on tour in support of her last release “Strangers Again,” a collection of duets with some of her favorite male artists, including Don McLean, Michael McDonald, Jeff Bridges, Willie Nelson and Jackson Browne. She will be playing at Honokaa Peoples Theatre on Jan. 5 next year.

Cast for ‘Wonderland’ at Aloha Theatre announced
Join Kona’s own Lotus Buss as she dons the Alice costume and falls into “Wonderland,” an all-new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice” tales, created specifically for Aloha Theatre. The new script, by California playwright Susie Burke, features elements from both “Alice” books, along with music and dance.
Aloha Theatre audiences will remember Lotus from her recent, acclaimed portrayal of Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker.” Joining her in Wonderland will be 22 Big Island performers including children, teens, and adults. They will be playing many well known Carroll characters, such as: Humpty Dumpty (Zea Levine), the Cheshire Cat (Christy Aragon), the Mad Hatter (Xavier Chung), Professor Dodo (Katie Wickersham), the Caterplllar (Tatiana Stanley), Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Harli Meech and Tiana Yeaman-Clifford), the March Hare (Christian Aragon), the Red Queen (Ty Iaela) and the White Queen (Heather Shorey).
“Wonderland” is directed by Jerry Tracy, assisted by Nikki Johnson. Megan Hodge is music director, Tatiana Stanley is choreographer, and costume designer is Carol Conner.
Alice and the Wondergang will begin their curious journey at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu on June 22, continuing for two weekends until July 1, with Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. Tickets range from $5 to $15.
