KAILUA-KONA — No injuries were reported following a fire at a Hilo home on Wednesday night.

The Hawaii Fire Department responded at 9:25 p.m. to a single-story, wooden home at 43 Nahalea Avenue to find the home’s occupants already out of the home and on the street. They stated that everyone had made it out of the home and that a fire was burning in one of the two kitchens in the home.

One of the residents told first responders that they had been cooking and oil from the pan caught fire and had spread to items that were above the stove, according to the department. They evacuated the home and summoned firefighters when they were unable to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters located flames in the kitchen and an adjacent room and brought the fire under control within 10 minutes of their arrival. It was declared out 10 minutes later.

Damage was estimated at $100,000.
