Kevin sings Johnny: A Tribute to Johnny Mathis to perform at Gertrude’s

Kevin Kirkendahl will be in Kailua-Kona on Sunday for the Hawaii debut of Kevin Sings Johnny: A Tribute to Johnny Mathis.

Kirkendahl will be performing the songs of artist Johnny Mathis from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar. Tickets are $30 in advance, and $35 at the door.

“I was here several months ago staying with a friend, and we went out to Gertrude’s and there were all these people in the audience playing ukuleles with the band,” Kirkendahl said. “And we ran into the owners and they welcomed me with open arms.”

Kirkendahl grew up around jazz music in Minnesota, as his father was a musician mentored by Sonny Rollins. Kirkendahl’s focus as a performer has been singing.

“The thing about Mathis tunes is you can close your eyes and listen to his lyrics and create an image in you head of what he is singing about,” Kirkendahl said.
