Frederick Stone

Frederick Doren Stone, 79, of Kurtistown, died May 29, 2018. Born in Freetown, N.Y, he taught environmental science at the University of Hawaii and was director of the Forest TEAM program at Hawaii Community College until his retirement. Stone published numerous articles about the evolutionary biology of cave-adapted insects and worked on biodiversity conservation. He also provided expert witness testimony on projects affecting biodiversity including the contested case regarding industrial development impacting Maunakea’s biologic ecosystems.

He is survived by his partner, Deborah J.Ward and daughter, Achariya Tanya (Dave) Rezak; sisters, Beth, Laura and Nancy; one granddaughter; nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his brother Benjamin (Joyce) and his parents, Lois and Gerald Stone.

The family plans a service at a later date.

Shigeo Tomosada

Shigeo Tomosada, 89, of Hilo, died June 20, 2018, in the Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 18, 1928, in Hilo, he was retired from Air Flo Express in Hilo as the air freight manager. He was a veteran of the Korean War and member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.

Visitation will be 4-5 p.m. June 26 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. memorial service.

He is survived by wife, Grace Tomosada of Hilo; sons, Len (Laroma) Tomosada of Waimea (Big Island) and Ron Tomosada of Hilo; daughter, Jan Tomosada of Honolulu; granddaughter, Erin Tomosada of Washington state; numerous nephews and nieces.

Gary Akamatsu

Mr. Gary Toshio Akamatsu, 74, of Kealakekua, died June 3, 2018, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Sept. 19, 1943, in Kealakekua, he was a retired manager in the transportation squadron at Hickam Air Force Base. He was a member of the 64 and Friends Golf Club, Daifukuji Soto Mission and a U.S. Army veteran.

Private services were held on June 19. The family requests no koden (monetary) condolences.

He is survived by his mother, Fujiko Akamatsu of Kealakekua; sisters, Mildred (Stanley) Tromberg of Plantation, Fla., Linda (Samuel) Camp of Honolulu, and Phyllis (Solomon) Alani of Hookena; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jitsuo Ishimoto

Jitsuo Ishimoto, 93, of Hilo, died April 27, 2018, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. He was born in Papaikou and was a retired cane truck driver with the former Hilo Coast Processing Co. and was also an independent cane farmer.

Private family services were held. No monetary donations.

He is survived by his sons, Eli Ishimoto of Hilo, Brian Ishimoto of Hilo and Grant Ishimoto of Honolulu; daughters, Sandra (Terry) Beich of Minn., Faith Ishimoto of Hilo and Lorena (Paul) Soultz of Hilo; sisters, Fumie Jyo of Hilo and Shirley Gushiken of Honolulu; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
