Police nab 19 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for suspected drunken driving between June 18 and Sunday. Two of those drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested seven motorists while South Hilo officers arrested six. Officers in South Kohala and Puna arrested three drivers in each district, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 561 DUI arrests compared with 556 during the same period last year, according to police.

Through Monday, there have been 15 deaths on Hawaii Island public roads compared with 20 fatalities at this time last year.
