Kona Science Cafe presents ‘Coral Spawning and Reef Fish Culture’ on Friday

Recent progress in aquaculture and marine science shows hope for restoring damaged reefs. Technology for raising reef fish has evolved to the point where some aquarium fish can be raised profitably. A joint effort to culture cauliflower coral has recently had some preliminary success. In this presentation, three members of the team will share their aspects of the work. Syd Kraul, owner of Pacific Planktonics, will discuss culture of reef fish and invertebrates, and their relation to reef health. Lindsey Kramer of Eyes of the Reef Network and Bill Coney, CEO of the Legacy Reef Foundation, will share preliminary results of cauliflower coral spawning and baby coral growth at facilities at NELHA.

This event is scheduled for Friday, 5-7:30 p.m., at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center, 73-4485 Kahilihili St., Kailua-Kona. It includes time before and after the presentation for questions, answers, and networking opportunities. All are welcome.

A potluck is included with the event. Bring pupu and non-alcoholic beverages to share; reusable plates and cups are encouraged.
