KAILUA-KONA — A 48-year-old Hilo man died following a single-vehicle crash Monday morning on Highway 130 in Keaʻau.

The Hawaii Police Department identified him as Peter Veincent Jr.

Responding to a 12:57 a.m. call, police determined that a 2001 Mazda sports-utility vehicle, driven by Veincent, was traveling toward Pahoa on Highway 130 when it crossed the centerline and struck a rock embankment at the highway’s intersection with Pohaku Place.

Veincent was transported by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:01 a.m.

He was not wearing a seatbelt, and it is unknown at this time if speed or intoxication were factors in this crash. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone who witnessed the crash should call Officer Casey Cabral at 961-2329.
