Isabella Sampaia

Isabella “Lisa” Prudencio Sampaia, 82, of Hilo, died July 16, 2018, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born on Sept. 18, 1935, in Hilo, she was a homemaker. She was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo, Pepeekeo Senior Citizens Club and Hawaii Island Adult Care.

Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 1 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel, Hilo for a 7 p.m. wake service. Visitation will continue from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Aug. 2 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hilo for a 10 a.m. funeral Mass. Burial to follow at Mauna Kea Memorial Park, Papaikou. Casual attire.

She is survived by, sons, Gabriel (Gloria) Sampaia of Hilo and Anthony Paul Sampaia of Pepeekeo; daughter, Therese Sampaia Glowania of Hilo; sisters, Florence Prudencio of Honolulu, Oahu and Mildred Lucas of Hilo; five grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Melvin Kameilehoku Thomas

Melvin “Mel,” “Uncle Mel,” “Hoku” Kameilehoku Thomas, 74, of Honalo, died June 17, 2018, at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born in Waiaha on May 18, 1944, he was a retired cook at the King Kamehameha Hotel. He was the owner of the former Kuakini Café Restaurant and a member of the Kuakahela Ohana.

A celebration of life will be held at noon on Aug. 4, at Higashihara Park pavilion in Honalo. The family requests casual attire.

He is survived by his sons, Melvin (Sara) Thomas, Jr., of Kailua-Kona, Mark (Renee) Thomas of Maui; stepsons, Thomas (Lei) Rivera of Honalo and Rusty Ishii of Kealakekua; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nancy Phillips

Nancy Jean Phillips, 84, of Kamuela, died July 20, 2018, at her residence. She was born in Barrington, N.J. She was a retired registered nurse for Honokaa Hospital and North Hawaii Community Hospital. She was a member of the HGEA, Hawaiian Quilting Club, Anuenue Quilters, and Tutu’s Quilters.

She is survived by spouse, James Phillips of Kamuela; daughter, Becky (Ian) Tully of Port Townsend, Wash.; sons, James (Tua) Phillips, Jr. of Laupahoehoe, and Eric (Haru) Phillips of Honolulu; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

Richard Kino

Richard Kino, 95, of Hilo, died July 05, 2018, at home. Born Aug. 8, 1922 in Hilo, he was retired and a member of Crescent City Lions Club and New Hope Christian Fellowship in Hilo.

Iranell Kananika’ikiokalama Sanchez

Iranell Maude Kananika’ikiokalama Sanchez, 66, of Mountain View, died July 3, 2018, at home. Also known as Nell or Ira, she was born March 29, 1952, on Oahu and later moved to the Big Island for the second half of her life, where she continued to live as a wife and artist.

Iranell is survived by husband Roger Sanchez of Mountain View; one son; one daughter; one sister; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Mitsuto Harada

Mitsuto Harada, 101, of Hilo, died June 19, 2018, at home. Born June 20, 1916, he was a retired carpenter.
