First Friday event this week
This Friday, Holualoa Village again welcomes friends and visitors to their monthly celebration of art, music and food: First Friday Art-After-Dark. August’s event is Friday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The village block party features art and artists in over a dozen galleries and shops, as well as free live music and a great selection of local food vendors. This community event is for all ages.
Glyph Art Gallery welcomes a new artist to the gallery, Ginger Sandell. Ginger paints rich, layered landscapes in oils in an expressive, slightly other worldly style. Also new this month, the gallery has a new collection of woodblock prints from artist Margaret Barnaby. Regulars Sundog Bread, with wood fired, naturally leavened bread and pastries will be out front.
At Holualoa Gallery, artists and owners, Matthew and Mary Lovein will be present, along with featured artist, Mark Martel painting live. Kona Dogs Gourmet Street Food will provide culinary delights. John-E Collins will be performing live with fun classic rock songs we know and love.
Event regulars the Mauna High Notes will be performing on the lanai of Holualoa Ukelele Gallery. Inside, owner Sam Rosen will be featuring the last custom ukuleles of master builder Leo Koschella, and new Aloha shirts.
Pat Pearlman Designs, in the historic pink Kona Hotel, features new jewelry with peridot, August’s light green birthstone, symbolizing strength. Peridot is the same stone found in lava, and is often called the tears of Pele.

Local art gallery creates opportunities for art lovers
If you’re looking for a little joy and inspiration, Tiffany’s Art Agency in Hawi has announced a new Art &Soul Sunday series, exclusively for the month of August.
Each Sunday between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., guests will have a chance to meet local artists and interact.
Witnessing first-hand the difference art makes in peoples lives, Tiffany’s Art Agency founder and curator Tiffany Shafto launched Art &Soul Sundays to create more opportunities for artists and art lovers to connect.
Visit the gallery to meet: Timothy Allan Shafto, mixed-media and Claire Seastone, ceramics on Aug. 5; Christian Enns, plein air painter on Aug. 12: Beau Jack Key, photographer and Sheinfeld Rodriguez, jewelry designers on Aug. 19; and Mary Spears, collage on Aug 26.
You’ll also catch the latest month long show for featured artist, Betty Hay Freeland, a native of Kohala, and experience the works of dozens of other talented local artists.

Sunday Clay – High Fire! series at Volcano Art Center
Have you experienced the pleasure of putting your own handmade functional pottery into use? All skill levels are welcome to join us at Volcano Art Center’s ceramic studio where we will be working with stoneware clay and high-fire reduction glazes.
Teaching artist, Erik Wold, will provide instruction for this class including demonstrations of wheel throwing methods and be available for individualized assistance. Those new to clay will be guided step by step through the basics of using the potter’s wheel or handbuilding techniques. Continuing students and those with previous experience are encouraged to develop their skills and are welcome to pursue more advanced directions with the instructor’s helpful input. Informal discussion on topics ranging from sources of creative inspiration to various pottery styles and traditions from around the world will supplement this hands-on learning experience.
Seven registration slots are open to “wheel throwers,” and two additional places will be open to “hand builders”. Beginners as well as continuing students are welcome.
Sunday Clay – High Fire! is an eight-week workshop beginning Sunday through Sept. 30, with no class on Aug. 12. There will be a morning session from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or an afternoon session from 2:45-5:45 p.m.
Cost for either session is $200/$180 for VAC members, plus a $15 materials fee for 6 pounds of clay, which includes glazes and firing for that material. Additional clay will be available for purchase.
Open studio time will be available to registered students on Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m. Cost is $10 per day, with tickets available at the administration office front desk during business hours. Must be registered for a ceramics class to participate.
Erik Wold is a full-time potter living in Volcano Village. He is a member of the Volcano Village artists hui, and sells his wares regularly Saturday at the Hilo Farmers Market, and Sunday at the Cooper Center Farmers Market in Volcano. Erik studied ceramics at the University of Hawaii-Hilo, graduating in 1993.

West Hawaii Dance Theatre to hold class placement sessions for annual Nutcracker ballet
This year’s Nutcracker ballet will again include an amazing live orchestra led by conductor Brian Hollinger, with Guest Dancers Timour Borutansenkov, Frederick Davis, and more. Join the Nutcracker family and experience the magic.
On Aug. 18, West Hawaii Dance Theatre will be holding class placement sessions by age group to place individuals in appropriately leveled classes in which students will be rehearsing particular scenes for the performance. Participation requires a strong commitment and work ethic along with attending all three performance Dec. 21, 22 and 23.
Age group sessions: ages 6-9 at 2:30 p.m.; ages 10-12 at 3 p.m.; ages 13 and up at 3:30 p.m.
