WAIMEA — Kahilu Theatre will soon receive $250,000 through a state grant designated by the Hawaii Legislature.
Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funds were appropriated by the 2018 Legislature to enhance audience and artist experience at the 20,000 square-foot, multi-disciplinary arts center in Waimea.
The grant funds complement a major renovations project completed at the theater in 2016 with resources from the organization’s first State CIP grant. The 2018 grant funds will be applied in the coming year to furnishings, safety, sound, lighting and other equipment.
“We are a very small organization with very big ambitions,” Kahilu Theatre’s Executive Director Deborah Goodwin said. “These state funds are essential for repairs and upgrades to our beautiful facility made possible by our original benefactor, Richard Smart.”

In the recently completed 37th season, Kahilu Theatre hosted more than 21,000 guests and earned 13 sellout events from its Broadway stage, along with numerous arts and entertainment, gallery exhibits, cultural events and year-round education programs.
“The Theatre impacts all ages and provides not only entertainment, but educational programs for local students. This grant is an investment in our future,” Rep. Evans said.
