Hospice of Kona’s 10th annual Royal Tea Fundraiser Saturday

KAILUA-KONA — The fancy hat contest makes a comeback just in time for Hospice of Kona’s 10th annual Royal Tea, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.

As in years past, guests are welcome to don festive hats and outfits as they celebrate life, friendship, and honor those who have passed away. This fundraiser for Hospice of Kona’s residential hospice home, Nakamaru Hale, will treat guests to a traditional high tea — featuring tasty mini sandwiches, pastries, scones and more — all with a Hawaiian twist. Tickets start at $55. There are also discounts for a ticket plus a wine glass (which includes unlimited wine at the event), duo tickets, tables of 10 and others. To purchase tickets, visit www.HospiceofKona.org or stop by the HOK office at 75-5925 Walua Road.

A silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind jewelry, works by local artists, activities, health classes, restaurant gift certificates and more will also be available at the event.

Those interested in sponsorships may contact info@hospiceofkona.org.

Can you help identify the young boys in the photo?

Nicole Garcia is a master’s student in the Heritage Management Program at UH Hilo. She is also a volunteer at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center’s Heritage Center, in Honokaa and became interested in the local experience during WWII after a few years working in the Heritage Center,

She has helped identify Gilbert Hokama, Albert Uiha Lindsey and Henry Ah Fong Ah Sam, Parker Ranch cowboys in the picture. The photo was taken at the Camp Tarawa Marine Rodeo hosted by Parker Ranch in 1944.

Garcia would like to hear stories and experiences about the effects Camp Tarawa (a Marine camp in Waimea during WWII) had on the local community.

If you have stories to share, or have heard stories passed down in your family, please contact Nicole Garcia at Nicoleg7@hawaii.edu or by phone at North Hawaii Education and Research Center (NHERC)@ (808) 775-8890.
