Tommy Emmanuel concert Sunday
Guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel is coming to the Big Island to perform one concert on Sunday. This will be a limited engagement. Give a listen to “Old Photographs,” the closing track on Tommy Emmanuel’s It’s Never Too Late, and you’ll hear the distinctive squeak of finger noise as he runs his hands across the frets of his Maton Signature TE guitar. Many musicians would edit those imperfections out, but to Emmanuel, those imperfections are perfect.
A master technician, Emmanuel started professionally at age 6, rising through the ranks as a studio player and member of several Australian rock bands before he set off on a solo career. One of only five musicians handpicked by his mentor, Chet Atkins, as a Certified Guitar Player (CGP), he’s piled up numerous accolades, including two Grammy nominations, two ARIA Awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association — the Aussie equivalent of the Recording Academy — and repeated honors in the Guitar Player magazine reader’s poll.
A noted fingerstyle guitarist, Emmanuel frequently threads three different parts simultaneously into his material, operating as a one-man band who handles the melody, the supporting chords and the bass all at once. His talents, which translate in any language, carry him to the far corners of the globe, but Emmanuel never plays the same show twice, and he improvises big chunks of every date. That leaves him open to those technical imperfections, though they also provide some of the humanity to an other-worldly talent.
The concert is Sunday at Honokaa People’s Theatre in Honokaa. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 for general admission and $75 for Gold Circle seating.

WHDT welcomes guest artist Davis
West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy is pleased to announce that special guest artist Fredrick Davis will be at the WHDT from Sept. 4-9 to offer classes in contemporary dance, ballet technique, and pas de deux.
Davis is the star of the PBS Special “From The Streets to the Stage,” an Emmy Award-winning documentary that was created by Ann Cater of PBS. Our community will have the opportunity to see Davis perform in West Hawaii Dance Theatre’s 2018 Nutcracker Ballet at the Kahilu Theatre, Dec. 21, 22 and 23.
As a freelance artist, Davis has performed with many ballet companies including Roanoke Ballet Theatre, Greensboro Ballet, San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet and Dissonance Dance Theater, to name a few.
WHDT is offering a limited number of full and partial scholarships for male dancers age 12 and up to attend one of the ballet or contemporary classes, plus the pas de deux class at 1 p.m. Sept. 8. Christ Church Episcopal hosting Upcountry Faire
Christ Church Episcopal, located at the corner of Mamalahoa Highway and Konawaena School Road in Kealakekua will hold its annual Upcountry Faire from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3.
The Upcountry Faire is a fun annual event for the entire community and features games, prizes, pony rides, live DJ, great food, large silent auction and much more. This year, KARES will have Puna rescue dogs for adoption providing a terrific opportunity to help our neighbors in need.
Event proceeds will be split between Family Support Hawaii, upgrades for our educational facility, which houses the Aha Punana Leo immersion school, and renovations for the little 150-year-old church which was founded in 1867 and is one of the oldest in the entire area.
Everyone is welcome to join in the festivities and tour the historic church and grounds which played an important and interesting part in the history of the west side of the Big Island.
