Police nab 21 motorists for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 20 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents while five were younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested nine motorists followed by Puna officers with six and South Hilo officers with four, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested two drivers.

So far this year, there have been 735 DUI arrests compared with 742 during the same period last year, according to police.

Through Monday, there have been 21 deaths on Hawaii Island public roads. At this point in 2017, 24 people had lost their lives in traffic crashes.
