Waimea Community Chorus is seeking new members to join their 26th season.

Waimea Community Chorus (WCC) is about to embark on their 26th season starting Tuesday, and is inviting interested community members to join the 60-voice Waimea Community Chorus of Kahilu Theatre, under the direction of Barbara Kopra.

This year WCC will be performing a brand new work composed by pianist Mark Hayes, “Internation Carol Suites I-V,” which debuted at Carnegie Hall in Nov. 2017. In addition to the suites, there will also be a lively sing-a-long portion of the concert higlighting community favorites of the season. The chorus practices every Tuesday and as it begins the process of learning the music. New members are invited to check out the first two rehearsals in the Mike Luce Studio at the Kahilu Theatre on Tuesday and Sept. 11, starting at 6:45 p.m. For those who choose to join, membership is $55 for the season, which helps to support the program and covers the cost of music.

Requirements: No audition necessary, just the love of singing and commitment to attending rehearsals consistently. Reading music is a plus but is by no means necessary.

Rehearsals: The chorus practices from 6:45-9 p.m. every Tuesday in the Mike Luce Studio at the Kahilu Theatre and extra sectional rehearsals will be offered on the weekends.

Performances: 7 p.m. Dec. 8 and 4 p.m. Dec. 9 at Kahilu Theatre.

Info: Contact Barbara Kopra at bkopra@hpa.edu, or call the Kahilu Theatre Box Office at 885-6868.

‘Rise of the Wahine’ documentary release date announced

“Rise of the Wahine: Champions of Title IX” is a historical sports documentary chronicling the birth of the first Rainbow Wahine volleyball team during a time of great change for women’s equality. The film began production in 2012 and will be released on demand via digital streaming platforms on Wednesday.

The “Rise of the Wahine” 2018 premiere presented by HawaiianMiles will be held on Wednesday at the historic Hawaii Theater in Honolulu. Tickets to the premiere are available online at Riseofthewahinefilm.com for $18. Hawaiian Airlines is a sponsor of the film and will be donating all proceeds from the premiere event to the Patsy T Mink Foundation, an organization that supports educational access, opportunity and equity for low-income women and educational enrichment for children.

Set in the 1970s, “Rise of the Wahine” is the mostly untold story of a group of women from Hawaii who battled women’s inequality issues, leading up to and after the passing of Title IX. These women included Title IX co-author Patsy Mink and the University of Hawaii’s first women’s athletic director Dr. Donnis Thompson.

Those who attend the movie premiere on Wednesday will also be entered to win a trip for two to Las Vegas courtesy of HawaiianMiles. Attendees will automatically be entered to win a Las Vegas prize package that includes airfare, hotel accommodations on the strip, dining credit and show tickets. The winner will be announced following the movie premiere and Q&A with the filmmakers.

‘The Leaping Place’ on exhibit at Kahilu

Kahilu Exhibits will present The Leaping Place, a large format photography exhibition by Matt Shallenberger from Friday to Oct. 21. There will be an opening reception and walkthrough with Shallenberger from 4-6 p.m. Friday. A no-host bar and light pupu will be on offer.

“The Leaping Place” is a series of large-format landscape photographs, meant to illustrate two stories: First, of the artist’s family, who immigrated to Hawaii from the Portuguese Azores in the 1880s, and second, of the Kumulipo, the ancient Hawaiian creation chant. Named after the places from which departed souls begin their journeys to the underworld, the project aims to discover connections between different Hawaii communities, exploring the landscapes of their diverse pasts and shared present.

The Kahilu Galleries are free to the public and open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and during all Kahilu Theatre Performances.
