Police asking for help locating missing 75-year-old

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Richard Eugene Carvalho, a 75-year-old man who has been reported as missing.

Carvalho was last seen Aug. 24 in the Honokaa area, according to the Hawaii Police Department. He is described as being about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds with a slim build. He has gray and white hair and a full white beard.

Anyone with information on Carvalho or his whereabouts should call the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Detective Kayne Kelii at 961-2378 or Kayne.kelii@hawaiicounty.gov.

Police arrest 26 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 27 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

Kona officers arrested 11 motorists followed by South Hilo officers with six and Puna officers with five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. In addition, officers in South Kohala arrested three motorists while Ka‘u officers arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 761 DUI arrests compared with 757 during the same period last year, according to police.

Through Wednesday, there have been 21 deaths on Hawaii Island public roads. At this point in 2017, 26 people had lost their lives in traffic crashes.

Education Dept. ethics hotline receives 500 tips

HONOLULU — A report shows that the state Department of Education’s fraud and ethics hotline has received more than 500 tips since 2016, resulting in one termination case.

Hawaii News Now reports that a review prepared for the state education board indicates that 222 of the tips led to formal reviews with 59 claims found substantiated.

According to the report, the majority of the 59 substantiated cases involved human resources issues, but others included misuse of department resources, fiscal impropriety and falsification of records.

A substantiated case from the last fiscal year resulted in an employee firing. Among the other cases, one resulted in a suspension and two led to employees resigning. Six written warnings and 17 verbal warnings were also issued from the cases.
