Margaret Hughs

Margaret Jane Hughs, 97, of Kailua-Kona, died Aug. 30, 2018, at Life Care Center of Kona. She was born on Nov. 30, 1920 in Springfield, Mass., and was a retired operating room clerk and a sorority housemother at Cornell University. She was an award-winning silversmith and lapidary and a member of Christ Church Episcopal and Gem &Mineral Society of Syracuse, New York.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 29 at Christ Church Episcopal, 81-1004 Konawaena School Road, Kealakekua. A reception follows the service at the Queen Emma Community Center.

She is survived by daughter, Kate (Cirilo Rosario) Winter of Kailua-Kona; sons, Leslie (Linda) Hughs of Stamford, Vermont and Kenneth Hughs of Mannsville, New York; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Gene Pua

Gene K. Pua, 75, residing in Kealakekua, died July 7, 2018, in Kealakekua. Born Sept. 21, 1942, in Ka’u, he was a farm worker for Nakamoto egg farm. He enjoyed the ocean and playing ukulele.

Scattering of ashes at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 22 at the Honokohau Harbor followed by celebration of life at the Kona Old Airport Big Pavilion at noon.

He is survived by numerous family members.

Edmund Kong

Edmund “Ed” Velman Kong, 48, of Kawaihae died Aug. 20, 2018, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a landscaper, commercial painter and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Friends may call 8:30-9:45 a.m. Sept. 22 at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Waimea. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at the Kauwe Family Cemetery in Waimea. Casual attire.

He is survived by companion, Rhoda Awaa of Kawaihae; daughter, Elizabethrose Awaa-Kong of Kawaihae; son, Kawika Awaa-Kong of Kawaihae; stepdaughter, Helen Awaa of Hilo; stepson, Kaulana Awaa of Hilo; parents, Russell, Sr. and Glennlee Kong of Kawaihae; brothers, Russell Kong, Jr. of Kawaihae, Keoni Kong of Kawaihae; sisters, Elizabeth (Anson) Kong-Yim of Waikoloa, Roselee (Keoni) Ahana of Waimea; five grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Emiko Aihara

Emiko Aihara, 87, of Hilo, died Aug. 25, 2018, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Kohala on Nov. 21, 1930, she was a sales clerk at the former Tot’s n Teens, retired sales clerk at FW Woolworth. Member of Hilo Meishoin and Fukuoka Kenjin Kai.

Friends may call 5-6 p.m. Sept. 28 at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo for a 6 p.m. service. Family request casual attire.

Emiko is survived by son, Myles Aihara of Oahu; brother, Gilbert Kamegawa of Hilo; sister, Gail (Earl) Kaku of Hilo; one sister-in-law; one brother-in-law; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Maureen Giron

Maureen “Nani” Haunani Giron, 62, of Kailua-Kona, died Sept. 9, 2018, at home. Born on July 20, 1956, in Honolulu, she was the business owner of Aunty Nani’s Café. She was a food waitress at the former Sizzler’s Restaurant, Maxwell Landing, Laniakea Café, Pizza Hut and Honokohau Harbor House.

Visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Lutheran Church of Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako Street, Kailua-Kona. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Additional services will be held on Oahu. Casual attire and flowers are welcome.

She is survived by husband, Duke Giron of Kailua-Kona; sons, Nalei (Genevieve) Furtado-Piko of Kailua-Kona and Steven (Hyunjin) Giron of Waikoloa; daughters, Noelle (Keola) Taylor of Naalehu, Shantel (Kurt) Malina of Waikoloa, Lisa (Melvine) Giron of Kailua-Kona, Keikilani Furtado of Kailua-Kona and Marcell (Brian) Drake of Waikoloa; brother, Joseph Piko of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Laida Kalili of Maui and Deidra Mae Furtado of Honolulu, Oahu; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marciano Cadabona

Marciano “Rocky” “Fatso” Cadabona, 80, of Kurtistown, died Sept. 2, 2018 at Hilo Medical Center. Born on July 12, 1938, in Honohina, he was a retired food service manager for the state of Hawaii. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Friends may call 8:30-9:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Services begin at 9:30 a.m. Casual attire; burial at the East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery 2 (Section A. Row 135, Plot 12) at noon.

He is survived by daughters, Julie Hooker of California, Fay (Scott Haili) Cadabona of Kurtistown and Lisa (Albert Rosas, Jr.) Cadabona of Hilo; sons, Rocky (Karen) Cadabona of Mililani, Oahu and Scott (Stefanie) Cadabona of Oklahoma; brothers, Maximo Cadabona and Nazario (Virgie) Cadabona of California; Rudy (Grace) Pajimola, of Pepeekeo; one sister in-law; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lucio Cabus, Jr.

Lucio “Lucky” Cabus, Jr., 74, of Mountain View, formerly of Lihue, Kauai, and Kalihi, Oahu, died Aug. 29, 2018, in Keaau, Born on March 28, 1944, in Honolulu, he was a retired school bus driver for Roberts Hawaii and he also was previously employed by Von Hamm Young, Eagle’s Distributors, Mckesson Wine and Spirits, Island Beverage Company, 7up Bottling Company and Johnson Brothers.

Friends may call from 5-6 p.m. Sept. 29 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 6 p.m. memorial service. Aloha attire, flowers omitted, lei are welcomed. A scattering of ashes will be Oct. 13 on Oahu.

He was preceded in death by son, Lucio Cabus, III.

He is survived by wife, Naomi L. Cabus of Mountain View; daughters, Chassidy (Abraham) Keala of Makaha, Oahu, Desiree (Donald Clay) of Duluth, Georgia, Denise (Greg) Correia and Doreen Alimoot of Ewa Beach, Oahu; brother, William (Estel) Cabus of Ainaloa, Hawaii and Phillip Tam of Guam; sister, Magdalena Tremaine of Lihue, Kauai; 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Rodney Botelho

Rodney R. Botelho, 87, of Honokaa, died Sept. 3, 2018, at North Hawaii Community Hospital in Kamuela. Born in Kalopa, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps., graduated from Fresno State College and the University of Hawaii and taught at Laupahoehoe and Honokaa High School where he retired as athletic director.

Friends may call from 8-10 a.m. Sept. 29 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa. Celebration of Mass begins at 10 a.m. with military honors to follow. Casual attire; flower lei are welcomed.

He is survived by wife, Jacqueline Botelho of Honokaa; daughter, Tracy Botelho of Honokaa; son, KC Botelho of Honokaa; brother, Donald (Grace) Botelho of Kailua, Oahu; one sister in-law; three grandsons and three great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews.

Albert Sampaia

Albert James Sampaia, 60, of Hilo, died Aug. 10, 2018, in Arizona. Born on Sept. 16, 1957 in Hilo, he formerly worked at Goodyear Auto Service Center in Hilo and he was employed by the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation. He also was a member of the New Hope Hilo Church.

Friends may call 9-10 a.m. Sept. 29 at New Hope in Hilo for a 10 a.m. celebration of life, followed by lunch. A classic car and motorcycle run begins at 2 p.m. at New Hope Hilo.

He is survived by daughter, Brandi (Tyler) Milare of Hilo; brother, Gilbert (Carol) Sampaia of Hilo, numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Setsuko Okido

Setsuko Okido, 95, of Hilo, formerly of Honomu, died Sept. 4, 2018, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Yamaguchi-ken, Japan, she was a homemaker and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Buddhist Women’s Association and participated in Project Dana.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts.

She is survived by sister-in-law, Jeanette Okido of Honolulu; nieces and nephews.

Judy Boyce

Judy Lynn Boyce, 60 of Kailua-Kona, died Sept. 11, 2018, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Feb. 20, 1958, in Wheat Ridge, Colo., she was a human resources administrator for the fire department in Colorado.

Private services will be held at a later date.

She is survived by sons, Josh Medina, Michael Medina of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Jessica (Gary) Broom, Carollyn Boyce of Kailua-Kona; brother, Tim (Diane) Penick of Frederick, Colo.; sister, Shirley Smuda of Seattle; seven grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Teruko Miller

Teruko Marcia Miller, 80, of Mountain View, died Sept. 16, 2018, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Lihue, Kauai on Aug. 27, 1938, she was retired from UH Hilo.
