KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested nine motorists for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 24 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

South Hilo officers arrested four motorists while Kona officers arrested three, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Two drivers were arrested by officers in Puna.

So far this year, there have been 844 DUI arrests compared with 867 during the same period last year, according to police.

Through Tuesday, there have been 24 deaths on Hawaii Island public roads. At this point in 2017, 26 people had lost their lives in traffic crashes.
