Hawaii Food and Wine Festival features tastes from Tuscany
Be transported to central Italy through a six-course Tuscan feast that will bring the region’s rolling hills of olive groves and vineyards to life at the 2018 Hawaii Food and Wine Festival.
The festival is at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort &Spa.
A portion of the proceeds for this event will go to the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund in support of Island of Hawaii farmers.
Tickets are $250 general admission, $250 for First Hawaiian Bank Mastercard preferred access and $500 for VIP access.

SKEA hosting fall art camp for children
Learning the fundamentals of the visual arts is an essential part of every child’s education. Ellen Crocker, Heather Scarbrough, Chloe Miller and New York artist Pierre Fichefeux have some wonderful projects ready in multimedia, watercolors and wreath making at the SKEA fall art camp.
The fall art camp is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 9, 10 and 11 for children ages 6-11.
A special guest, Amo Gulinello, former head clown at Cirque du Soleil, will lead the students in some fun circus moves.
Tuition is $95 plus a current SKEA membership ($35). Scholarships are available, please ask for an application.

First Friday Art-After-Dark this weekend in Holualoa
This Friday, Holualoa Village again welcomes friends and visitors to their monthly celebration of art, music and food: First Friday Art-After-Dark. October’s event is from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The village block party features art and artists in over a dozen galleries and shops, as well as free live music and a great selection of local food vendors. This community event is for all ages.
Holualoa Gallery artists and owners will be on hand to meet visitors. Mark Martel will be painting in the gallery. Musician John-E Collins will be performing fun rock and roll songs to sing along and enjoy. Kona Dogs, Gourmet Street Food will be providing their hot dogs and other menu items.
Dr. Tim’s Medicine Band will be playing in front of Ipu Arts Plus Gallery, at the north end of Holualoa, from 6-8:30 p.m.
Glyph Art Gallery will be featuring new framed textile art from Charla Thompson, created using indigo dyes and traditional shibori techniques. The gallery will also feature new artwork from Mary Spears, and giclee prints from Shelly Maudsley White. Out front, Sundog Bread will be offering their gourmet baked goods.
Dave Lawrence will be rippin’ classic rock n’ roll at Koa Realty and the Holualoa Ukulele Gallery will host popular Hawaiian and contemporary tunes by Mauka Highnotes on its front lanai.
Opal and pink tourmaline are birthstones for October, and featured this month at Pat Pearlman Designs. Opal symbolizes faithfulness and confidence and pink tourmaline helps guide anxiety into self love.

Call for entries for #coffeelover art exhibit
The Donkey Mill Art Center and the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival (KCCF) are pleased to announce #coffeelover: A Kona Coffee Cultural Festival Exhibition and Juried Show 2018. Artists of all mediums are invited to submit their original works exploring Kona’s coffee culture.
Art must be on the theme of coffee, either by subject matter or medium. This year’s jurors are Big Island artists: coffee farmer Tara Cronin and Kahilu Gallery coordinator Margo Ray. The jurors will award first, second, and third place prizes, and a Peoples’ Choice Award will be awarded at the end of the exhibit based on votes received.
Entries are due Saturday, Oct, 20 and entry form and submission information can be found at http://donkeymillartcenter.org. The exhibit will be on view at the Donkey Mill from Saturday, Oct. 27 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The community is welcomed to join us to view the exhibit and celebrate artists at the opening reception and awards presentation on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Singer lands spot at Splashers in Kona
Uma Uke will be playing at Splashers from 3:15-6 p.m. every Wednesday starting this week, plus bonus performances on Oct. 5 and Oct. 19.
Uma sings songs from yesterday and today in almost all genres, resting most comfortably in R&B, pop, rock and reggae with some jazz and latin thrown in. She accompanies herself on ukulele.

Pastel on-site landscape painting workshop at VAC
Enjoy the outdoors and take your painting beyond the four walls of a classroom in the Pastel On-Site Landscape Painting workshop with Patti Pease Johnson from 9 a.m. to 13:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
Students will complete one 9×12 project. Weather permitting, the workshop will take place outdoors at Niaulani. Otherwise, the workshop will be held indoors with a reference photo.
Cost for the workshop is $50 and $45 for VAC Members plus a $10 supply fee per person. Beginner and intermediate artists are welcome.

Renowned cellist Ofra Harnoy to perform at Kohala Ranch
Hawaii Performing Arts Festival will present celebrated cellist Ofra Harnoy at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in a private home in Kohala Ranch, along with HPAF Artistic Director Val Underwood on piano. Works by Vivaldi, Saint Saens, Simon and Garfunkel and The Beatles are on the program.
Born in Israel, now residing in Toronto, Harnoy is the recipient of five Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys.
Champagne and dessert will be served at this performance. She plays a 100-year-old Hell cello from France. After Harnoy’s appearances in Hawaii, she’ll return to Canada for her official comeback concert, set to take place Nov. 17 in Toronto.
Tickets for the concert in Kohala Ranch are $85, and include champagne and dessert.

Watercolor artist and digital designer Stefanie Culbertson is KVA’s featured artist for the month of October. She has been painting with watercolors since she first moved to Hawaii in 1989 from the “Old World” Germany. Her fascination with the lush beauty of this island still inspires her art and she has grown deep roots here.

Blue Sea Artisans Gallery featured October artist is Richard Rochkovsky
The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery featured artist for the month of October is plein air oil painter Richard Rochkovsky.
Rochkovsky leads his weekly Friday group of plein air painters to scenic sites around Kona, painting on location. His paintings are filled with adjacent complimentary colors and warm shadow work that reflect the vibrancy of the scene and the excitement of the moment.
