KAILUA-KONA — A Hilo man is in police custody and a 39-year-old man remains hospitalized Monday following a reported stabbing Sunday evening in Hilo.

Hawaii Police officers were called about 6:45 p.m. to a Leilani Street home to a possible stabbing, the department said in a press release Monday. There, officers learned that the victim had suffered multiple stab wounds to his face, chase and arms.

The victim was transported to Hilo Medical Center for treatment. He remained in stable condition, police said Monday.

Hours later, at 10:35 p.m., officers arrested 21-year-old Cohlby R. Espaniola, of Hilo, in connection with the incident. He remains in police custody while detectives continue to investigate the incident, which has been classified as an attempted second-degree murder.

Anyone who may have any information regarding this case is asked to call Detective Kayne Kelii at 961-2378 or the Hawaii Police Department’s nonemergency number at 935-3311.
