Day of writing exploration at the Volcano Art Center

Join award-winning novelist and longtime Big Island writing teacher Tom Peek in his acclaimed workshop “Zen Pen – Writing as Spiritual Practice” from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

Peek’s inspirational techniques and simulating exercises have helped hundreds of islanders explore their creative minds and unique voices. Students always go home enthused, praising his workshops as “enlivening,” “revelatory,” and “the best Saturday I’ve spent in a long time.”

Workshop cost is $75/$65 for VAC Members. No writing experience is necessary. Students are asked to bring a personal object from your home, car, workshop, office or boat, and a handheld mirror, as well as a lunch.

Keauhou releases their third album

Oahu-based Hawaiian band Keauhou has released their new album, titled “Ua Ko, Ua Aina.”

The album, the band’s third, features four new original songs.

The band will be on the Big Island on Saturday for the Cultural Festival at Kings’ Shops in Waikoloa.

Kahilu Theatre presents ‘Artist 2 Artist’ with Henry Kapono and Jerry Santos

Kahilu Theatre presents an evening of music and talk-story with Hawaiian music legends Henry Kapono and Jerry Santos in an all-new “Artist 2 Artist” series at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

Henry Kapono will host three duo concerts that feature a different guest artist each night. Jerry Santos on Oct. 27, Keola Beamer on Nov. 24 and Milani Bilyeu on Jan. 19, will be joining Henry onstage to share the stories behind the songs that have been a part of our lives for a long time. Each of these artists has held a fundamental role in the development of Hawaiian music over the last 40 years and will perform individual hits then collaborate on a fun jam session.

Fairmont Orchid hosts local artist reception

Fairmont Orchid presents its inaugural Local Artist Reception featuring leading Hawaii Island artists, including Vicki Penney-Rohner, Mary Spears, Cyndy Urry and Jeff Barger at Luana Lounge from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.

This complimentary event is open to the public and will showcase unique works of art, light refreshments and live music from Hawaiian slack key guitar artist David Gomes. Guests are invited to interact with local artists and make purchases of original art.

Paint your own silk scarf at the Volcano Art Center

Join Big Island artist Patti Pease Johnson, for the Paint Your Own Silk Scarf workshop on from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at Volcano Art Center.

Cost for the workshop is $50 and $45 for VAC Members plus a $10 supply fee per person. Beginner and intermediate artists are welcome.

Patti Pease Johnson’s artwork can be found at galleries and shops across the state and in collections around the world. Patti has a designer’s ability to distill natural subjects into their most essential forms and to rearrange them in her paintings. She lives in Keaau with her family and teaches painting at her home studio.

Learn the art of palm sheath basketry at Volcano Art Center

Try your hand at creating Palm Sheath Baskets in hands-on workshop with Jelena Clay from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

This class is value packed with tricks on how to make artistic palm sheath baskets. All supplies will be provided to make two baskets. Embellishments will include philodendron sheaths, seed stems, jacaranda seed pods and other items collected by the teacher. Students will learn a folding technique as well as a demonstration of mounting sheaths to blocks for tall elegant works of art.

Class fee is $50/$45 for VAC members plus a $30 supply fee. Jelena will provide palm sheaths, thread, needles, embellishments. Pre-registration is required.
