Chamber Orchestra of Kona donates to homeless vets
The Chamber Orchestra of Kona presented a check on Oct. 10 to the American Legion’s Homeless Veterans Program for $840. This money was raised through a benefit concert in May for Memorial Day that featured local talent John Keawe and the entire orchestra. Another benefit concert will be scheduled for March 2019 that will benefit children’s programs in West Hawaii, and will be sponsored in part by AARP. Date and place to be announced.
Inclusion forum set for Oct. 25
The annual Inclusion First, West Hawaii Disability Legislative Forum is scheduled for 3:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Old Kona Airport Pavilion located at the end of Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona.
Central to the event will be discussions on disability issues involving transportation, employment, education, housing and health. Local agencies will set up booths and light refreshments will be provided. The forum will also include a panel featuring state legislators and county officials who will address current and upcoming initiatives as well as answer questions from the audience.

Lanihau Center celebrates its 30th anniversary
Lanihau Center will commemorate 30 years of serving the community as “The Heart of Kona” from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday. The celebration will feature entertainment and fun for the whole family, including a craft fair from noon to 4 p.m. and a car show from noon to 3 p.m.
Live entertainment begins at 4 p.m. with hula performances by Lori Lei’s Hula Studio and Na Kupuna O Ka‘u, followed by local band Good to Go at 4:45 p.m. and headliners Hoaikane from 5:30-7 p.m.

Brown graduates from Stephen Austin
Jill Brown of Kailua-Kona graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University during the August commencement exercises.
Brown received a Bachelor of Science in health science from the James I. Perkins College of Education with a minor in psychology.
Dessert chef shares culinary knowledge with students
Students in the Hawaii Community College – Palamanui Culinary Arts program received a special treat on Oct. 3 when a guest chef joined the class to share his dessert-making expertise.
Chef Jose Calpito was born and raised on Hawaii Island and is now a pastry cook at the Fairmont Orchid. He joined the Patisserie class at the Hawaii CC – Palamanui campus in Kona thanks to a partnership with the Hawaii Culinary Education Foundation.
“Chef Calpito’s visit was a great opportunity for students to learn from an expert who is currently in the industry,” said Hawaii CC – Palamanui Culinary Arts Instructor Paul Heerlein. “Being able to connect our students with local chefs is one of the great advantages of our program.”
Culinary students from Kealakehe High School also joined the guest lecture.
Calpito graduated from Kealakehe High School, studied culinary arts on Oahu, and has worked for restaurants on Hawaii Island, Oahu and at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.
