Verda Roy
Verda Leialoha Roy, 90, of Kahaluu, died Sept. 13, 2018, at Kona Community Hospital. Born April 26, 1928, in Honolulu, she was a career executive assistant serving at Alexander and Baldwin and Hawaii Visitor’s Bureau; an assistant to curators at Hulihee Palace; an executive assistant for the Kaloko-Honokohau Advisory Commission, Na Kokua Kaloko-Honokohau Helpers of Kaloko-Honokohau, Kulana Huli Honua Foundation of the Search for Wisdom, and co-founder of Halau No’eau Kahelemauna, member and charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Daughters of Hawaii and Mayflower Society and Alden Kindred of America.
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona; Mass at 4 p.m. The family requests aloha attire.
She is survived by daughters, Lauren Mikahala Roy of Kahaluu, and Moana (Billy Ochmann) Roy Kuma and Lisa Leialoha Roy-DeAguiar, all of Pahoehoe; sons-in-law, Kenneth Akana and Teiko Kuma, both of Kailua-Kona, and Lowell Ching of Waimea; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herbert Maunu, Jr.
Herbert Kualoha Maunu, Jr., 78, of Kailua-Kona, died Oct. 9, 2018, at his residence. Born Dec. 25, 1939, in North Kohala, he was a EPA specialist and radiation monitor with the Environmental Protection Agency, monitoring underground nuclear tests at the Nevada test site. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a member of The Royal Order of Kamehameha Moku O Kona, former board member of La’i Opua Homeowners Association and a member of the National Federation of the Blind.
A Celebration of Life will be held 10 a.m. Oct. 27 at the La’i Opua Community Center.
He is survived by wife, Virginia Maunu of Kailua Kona; son, Herbert (Marla) Maunu, III of Las Vegas; sisters, Emily Kamaka of Kona, Kaala (John) Kahalioumi; brothers, Kamuela Maunu all of North Kohala, Jesse Kaona of Las Vegas, Eddie Kaona of California; two granddaughters, numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernardy Torres, Jr.
Bernard Faisca Torres, Jr., 61, of Hilo, died Sept. 21, 2018, at the Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Honokaa and was a warehouse manager/truck driver with the Hawaii Island Food Basket, a former warehouse manager for Koehnen’s Interiors, and a member of the Juz-Us Hawaii Motorcycle Club.
Friends may meet 10 a.m. Oct. 26 at the Kamehameha Statue in Hilo where a memorial bike run will depart. Friends may call again 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Hall for a celebration of life gathering. Casual attire, no flowers.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Torres of Hilo; daughters, Bernalyn “Malia” (Tommy) Young and Chelsy (Kalani) Siliga, both of Mountain View; sons, Kuana (Marc Turner) Torres-Kahele of Piihonua, Tallon (Kasie) Torres of Keaukaha and Wade (Dulce) Torres of Keaau; sisters, Theresa Torres and Stephanie Wong, both of Hilo, Raynette (Alan) Lacad of Oahu and Lisa Torres of Kohala; brothers, Matthew (Laura) Torres of Papaikou, Larry Abenes of Colorado, Lawrence (Brandy) Abenes of Oahu, Leimana Abenes of Hilo, Rayburn (Robyn) Awaa-Lincoln of Oahu, Rene (Nicole) Talisay of Kurtistown and Raynard Torres of the Philippines; eight grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
