“Newcomers Highlight Local Races”

In the race for the Fourth District House of Represenatives (Ka’u, South Kona and a portion of North Kona) is newcomers to politics Fred Von Guenthner, Republican, and Minoru Inaba, Democrat. The House seat for the Fifth District (Kohala and a portion of North Kona) features Rep. Akoni Pule, Democrat, seeking re-election against newcomer Ethel Andrade, Repubican.
The council race finds two incumbents seeking the lone Kona seat: Harold “Kuma” Higashihara, Democrat, and Sherwood Greenwell, Republican. The council race for the Ka’u seat features newcomers Democrat Dante Keala Carpenter and Republican Minoru Kanda. The Kohala council race features former Board Supervisor Ikuo Hisaoka and newcomer Jack M. Iriguchi, Republican.
“Kona Civic Club Sends 2nd Letter”

The Kona Civic Club has prepared another letter to send to Gov. John Burns as a followup to their previous comments on the Keahole Airport project. Club president Sidney J. Weinrich said that the club had yet to receive a response from the governor regarding the letter which among other things requested that representatives of the Kona Civic Club be allowed to participate in negotiations on the final airport alignment.
“Design Is Completed For New Keauhou Surf Resort”

Plans for the Keauhou Surf have been finalized, a year after Inter-Island Resorts, Ltd., first announced the project.
Located on 14.5-acre coastline site, 25 feet above the sea, the 550-room Keauhou Surf is part of the $180 million Kamehameha Development project at Keauhou Bay. The design of the first $8 million, 275-room increment is a three-wing, four-story structure. Each air-conditioned room has a bath, dressing room and clothes storage area.
Construction is expected to start in spring 1969 with the first increment set for completion by summer 1970.

Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske of Waimea is named Career Woman of the Year for the State of Hawaii by the Hawaii Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Club. Perry-Fiske, owner of Anna Ranch in Waimea, is a rancher by profession and is highly regarded for her work crossbreeding of Herefords and Brahman bulls. She earned the honor for her efforts putting on, directing and staging of “Old Hawaii Horseback,” a benefit for the Hawaii Heart Association and her annual participation in the “Easter Parade of Hats. Nancy Smith was named Kona’s Career Woman of the Year.
