Devin Miles
Devin Scott Keawe Miles, 28, of Ocean View, died Sept. 16, 2018, at Kona Community Hospital. He was born on Nov. 14, 1989, in Hilo. He was a landscaper for Kona Hillscapes.
Friends may call at noon on Nov. 17 at Waiohinu Park in Naalehu for a full day of services. Services for Hilo will be announced at a later date.
Survived by companion, Joley Naihe of Ocean View; son, Devin Miles Jr., of Ocean View; mother, Rebecca Miles of Kapoho; brothers, Andrew Miles of Kapoho, and Matthew Aurello of Washington City, Washington; sisters, Lehia (John) O’Connor of Las Vegas, and Ilima Miles of Centerton, Arizona; hanai parents, Elizabeth (George) Kauwe of Kailua-Kona, and Tammy (Duane) Mareko-Ke of Naalehu; grandmothers, Mary Danfield of Kapoho, and Francine Miller of Keaau; numerous hanai siblings; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Melva Snider
Melva Ruth Snider, 86, of Mountain View, died Oct. 21, 2018, at home. Born on Oct. 27, 1931, in Honolulu, she was a homemaker.

Melva is survived by daughters, Terri (Dave) Jenkins of Union City, California, and Cindy Lei (Reed) Patterson of Kamuela.

Earl Bakken
Dr. Earl Elmer Bakken, 94, of North Kona, died Oct. 21, 2018 at his home. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Jan. 10, 1924, he was the co-founder and senior chairman of the board for Medtronic, Inc. He was an inventor and visionary, and created the world’s first battery-operated, transistorized external wearable pacemaker. He founded The Bakken Museum and co-founded the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting in Minneapolis. He helped found the North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was a Fellow of the Bakken Society, member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, National Academy of Engineering, Honorary Fellow, Biomedical Engineering Society, member of Society of Heart-Brain Medicine, North Hawaii Rotary Club, Board Chairman, Friends of the Future, and veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force.
Private services will be held.
In honor and memory of Dr. Bakken and his full life of living on and giving on, donations to the following would be appreciated. He is survived by his wife, Doris Bakken of North Kona; sons, Jeff (Linda) Bakken of Orono, Minnesota, and Bradley (Mary) Bakken, also of Orono; daughter, Pamela (Jeff) Petersmeyer of Prior Lake, Minnesota; stepson, David (Linda) Marshall of Rice, Minnesota; stepdaughter, Ramona West of Waikoloa; 11 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kalson Akiona
Kalson Mokuola Akiona, of Kailua-Kona, died Oct. 8, 2018. Born Feb. 5, 1979, he was a friend and supporter to many.
Celebration of life to be held starting at 9:30 a.m., Nov. 10, at the West Hawaii Community Health Center, 74-5214 Keanalehu Drive, Kailua-Kona.
He is survived by his parents, Garolyn Aganus Akiona, and Bimo Akiona; grandparents, Gary and Helen Aganus; siblings, Tyson, Kui and Dayson.
