“Kimura, Inaba, Pule Victorious; Hisaoka Wins By Big Margin”

County chairman Shunichi Kimura swept to an easy win over Jimmie Kealoha for the mayor’s seat under the new County Charter. Kimura chalked up 16,076 votes to Kealoha’s 9,748.
For the County Council’s Kona seat, Republican Sherwood Greenwell scored a 1,087 vote margin victory over Democrat Harold Higashihara. Ironically, Greenwell drew fewer votes within the 10 precincts that comprise the Kona Council district but received enough of a majority of the remainder of the Big Island districts to end up the victor.
Democrat Dante Carpenter was elected as the Ka’u seat, beating Republican Minoru Kanda 11,605 to 11,058.
Democrat Ikuo Hisaoka scored the easiest win outscoring Republican Jack Iriguchi by a 12,158 to 8,782 margin for the Kohala seat.
Democrat Minuro Inaba rolled to an easy win over Republican Fred Von Guenthner for the 4th District state House of Representatives seat, which covers the areas of Ka’u, South Kona and a portion of North Kona.
Democrat Akoni Pule of Kohala was re-elected to the 5th District of the State House, which includes Kohala and a portion of North Kona, edging out Republican Ethel Andrade 1,526 to 1,388.
Elected to three nonresidency seats on the County Council were Herbert Matayoshi, Robert Yamada and Josephine Yadao.
“Planning Conference Elects Officer Slate”

Richard Denison is elected as temporary president of the newly organized Kona Citizens Planning Conference. Permanent elections will take place in January 1969. Other officers include Ichiro Shikada, Earl Younker, Nancy Smith and Mark Sutherland.
The aim of the organization, for which membership is $3 annually, is to plan for more housing for Kona, parks and recreation, traffic and safety and other civic needs.

The first portion of work at the Kealakehe School site is nearing completion with workers this week putting the final touches on the two circular classroom buildings.
