KAILUA-KONA — A high surf advisory has been posted for north- and west-facing shores of the Big Island through noon Thursday.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Honolulu say a large northwest swell will spread down the island chain, resulting in very large and dangerous surf along north- and west- facing shores of most islands. They also noted that because this is a “long duration high surf event, due to an extended period of strong wave-generating winds being directed at the islands,” surf will likely remain at or above advisory levels through Friday night in many areas.
Wave heights of 10 to 15 feet are forecast along north-facing shores while 6- to 10-foot waves are expected along west-facing shores of the Big Island’s norther, eastern and Kona coasts.
