KAILUA-KONA — A wind advisory has been posted for Big Island summits through early Wednesday.

East winds of 35 to 50 mph with localized gusts topping 60 mph are forecast for the Mauna Loa and Maunakea summits through 6 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Honolulu said Tuesday. Models indicate winds may increase Tuesday night, before beginning to weaken Wednesday morning.

Forecasters cautioned that winds this strong can make driving high-profile vehicles difficult and can cause car doors to slam. Motorists are advised to drive with caution.

The Maunakea Access Road was open as of 11:10 a.m. Tuesday.
