Waimea Community Chorus to perform their Christmas concert
Waimea Community Chorus is singing their 26th annual Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Kahilu Theatre.
A timeless tradition in the town of Kamuela, the Waimea Community Chorus (WCC) under the direction of Barbara Kopra once again ushers in the holiday spirit at Kahilu Theatre with a variety of songs of the season. This year’s concert will feature a major work arranged by acclaimed composer and pianist Mark Hayes, “The International Carol Suites I-V,” which debuted at Carnegie Hall in November 2017.
In addition to the Suites, the more than 70 singers and more than 20 musicians will invite the audience to join in singing Christmas classics, “It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas,” “We Need a Little Christmas,” and “Silver Bells.” The performance will finish with a beautiful rendition of the Hawaiian song “Po La’i E ,” also known as “Silent Night.”

Volcano Festival Chorus presents its 25th annual winter concert ‘A Gift of Love’
Volcano Festival Chorus will present its 25th annual Christmas concert “A Gift of Love” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at KMC’s Kilauea Theater. The 25-member chorus is under the direction of Roch Jones with accompaniment by Laura Kahale. Also joining the chorus will be Cheryl Shine on flute.
The chorus, started in 1994 by renowned music director Camille Almy, is now sponsored by the Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network (KDEN). The 25th concert is presented as a gift to the Volcano community as a mahalo for all their support.
Admission is free; however, donations will be gratefully accepted. Park entrance fees may apply.
Kailua Village Artists featured artist in Dec. is Kathleen Carr
The Kailua Village Artists featured artist for the month of December is photographer Kathleen Carr.
Carr is a professional and fine art photographer, teacher, author, and a former Polaroid creative uses consultant. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Ohio University in 1970, and then studied extensively with Minor White and worked for “Aperture,” a renowned photography quarterly. Carr received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in 1991.
Meet Carr and learn more about her work process when she is working at the gallery this Saturday and Sunday, and Monday, Dec. 17 and Thursdays, Dec. 20 and 27.

West Hawaii County Band announces the final concert of the year
The West Hawaii County Band announces the final free Friday concert of 2018, to be presented at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14 at Hale Halawai County Park on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.
“Just hear those sleigh bells ringing and jing-jing-jingling too…” at the next concert of the West Hawaii Count Band. Join the band for an hour of music, just in time to get you into that festive spirit. The band will feature tunes for the season including a medley of Christmas tunes in the style of the Canadian Brass, “Carol of the Drum,” “The Festival of Lights Overture,” a medley of tunes for Chanukah and more. And of what would Christmas in the islands be without “Mele Kalikimaka.”
This concert will be led by guest conductor Richard Shields.

Island Breeze performing at the Kahilu
Kahilu Theatre is proud to present a unique trio of world-class musicians, Island Breeze, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.
Award-winning Hawaiian slack key guitarist Peterson and shakuhachi grand master Lee joined forces with taiko master Endo during a weeklong residency in Honolulu in 2012. Each artist conducted intensive workshops and also sought to skillfully blend their individual styles together to create an inspired sound distinctive to the Hawaiian Islands. The trio put together a program of refreshing music as a result of their collaboration and presented it in concert at the University of Hawaii’s Orvis Auditorium. In August of 2014, the trio recorded “Island Breeze,” which was nominated for Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Album of the Year and for Instrumental Song of the Year in 2015.

First Friday celebrates the holidays
From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Holualoa village hosts the holiday edition of the monthly community event, First Friday Art After Dark. Village galleries will feature new art and artists, tasty street eats, and a range of musical performances to choose from. This community event is free and for all ages.
At Holualoa Gallery, artists and owners Matthew and Mary Lovein will be present with featured artist, Mark Martel, painting live. Out front will be harpist, Jane Shroyer and sponsored food truck, Kona Dogs Gourmet Street Food.
Glyph Art Gallery will be hosting Holualoa photographer Don Slocum, who will be showing an extended selection of work out front, as well as gallery artists Andrea Pro and Diane Tunnell. New infused mica raku from Kate and Will Jacobson, hand painted silks from Gabrielle Bayer, and glass art from Krista Flood will also be on display for the first time. Look for Sundog Bread out front, offering fresh baked treats.
Pat Pearlman Designs is celebrating its fifth anniversary at the retail location in Holualoa. Mention the anniversary this First Friday and receive a free gift.
Dave Lawrence will be pumping classic rock n’ roll at Koa Realty and the Holualoa Ukulele Gallery will host popular Hawaiian and contemporary tunes by Mauka Highnotes on its front lanai.
