Chair Tai Chi/QiGong will happen from 1:30-2:30 p.m. today led by with Madeline Sofranac. Enjoy simple, effective hand and leg movements, postures, gentle deep breathing and pressure point techniques while seated in a chair. The class is recommended for seniors, physically challenged persons and anyone recovering from surgery or living with injuries.

Understanding Alzheimer’s &Other Dementias is an educational talk to be presented from 1-2:30 p.m. this Friday by Patrick Toal, Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter’s Big Island regional coordinator. As a geriatric social worker, he has been helping people living with Alzheimer’s and their care partners for more than 30 years. This new one-hour interactive program explains the basics of Alzheimer’s; examines what happens in a brain affected by Alzheimer’s; details the risk factors and stages of the disease; and identifies FDA approved treatments available to treat some symptoms.

Beginner’s Yoga will be from 4-5 p.m. Dec. 18 with Kiyomi Falcon. Yoga has both preventive and therapeutic benefits. It increases body awareness, relieves chronic stress patterns and muscle strain, relaxes mind and body, centers attention, sharpens concentration and frees the spirit. Falcon also incorporates meditation practice into this class.

Plant Based Potluck Hui will meet from 5-6:30 p.m. Dec. 19, led by Vivienne Aronowitz, a registered dietitian. Eating a plant-based diet is a powerful action that can protect the planet, and promote better health and sustainability. The group exchanges recipes, tips and food. Bring a copy of the recipe, ensuring it includes no ingredients from animals (meat, fish, poultry, eggs or dairy). Dishes must be service-ready. Bring your own reusable plates, bowls and utensils.

Self Massage for Ear &Head will be held from 10:30 a.m.-noon Dec. 29 with Chikako Hoshino-Powers, specializing in fascia and connective tissue body realignment. Proper head massage enhances psychological well-being and relieves tension. Learn to relax and release stress by using simple applications that have powerful benefits. This practice can release emotions you might not realize you’ve been holding. Ear reflexology massage stimulates and supports health and energy for the entire body. Bring one large and two hand towels.

Advanced Ukulele meets from 9:30-11 a.m. every Tuesday (except Dec. 25) with students of Aunty Marjie Spencer. This group welcomes experienced players of all ages. Bring your ukulele and join in a morning of friendship and song.

Tutu’s House Writers’ Support Group meets from 10 a.m.-noon each Tuesday (except Dec. 25). Interested persons are invited to join this interesting group of new writers to published authors. Come prepared to share something you are currently working on with this engaging group in an encouraging place to explore your writing voice, and receive constructive feedback or comments if you desire.

Knitting &Knitting Support meets from 12:30-3 p.m. every Tuesday (except Dec. 25) with Gretchen Geisler, a lifetime knitter. This class is for all skill levels ages 10 to adult. Bring projects, get knitting questions answered and visit with other knitters. Beginners will be guided into a suitable project.

Chair Yoga meets from 9:30-10:30 a.m. each Friday, facilitated by Kit Hill or Rebecca Brewer, both community-minded yoga enthusiasts. This class is for those who need a gentle and slow yoga in a chair practice. The movements are designed to stretch and strengthen the body without standing or lying on a mat. It may include some easy standing poses behind the chair.

Scrabble Meetup gathers from 1:30-4 p.m. each Friday with Annabel Spielman. Word lovers of every age and skill level are encouraged to play this classic game with relaxed rules; dictionary use permitted. It’s a great way to retain and expand vocabulary, spelling, memory and observation skills in a congenial atmosphere.
