Officer gives good lesson

I was rightfully pulled over recently for running a yellow light while turning onto Kuakini Highway from Henry Street. This was in heavy afternoon traffic and I was in a hurry for no particular reason.

The officer gave me a very informative, thoughtful and the politest scolding I have ever received. Simply put, driving through yellow lights can put you and others in harm’s way. As we all know, just a small fender bender itself can cause hours of snarled traffic.

The officer did not give me a ticket but asked that I tell 97 others that yellow means stop — $97 would have been the cost of the ticket. I respectfully submit this letter to him as payment for my mistake. I would like to thank him and all the police officers who serve and protect our community.

Hirono somehow outdoes herself

Having now lived on this gorgeous island for almost 20 years, I have long understood that our political representatives leave something to be desired from the standpoint of quality of intelligence. That being said, I still cringe every time Sen. Mazie Hirono steps in front of the camera!

If she is the best we have than we have slid to a new low. During the Kavanaugh hearings she embarrassed both herself and women everywhere when she blatantly stated that men should just sit down and shut up, implying that women, by merely making an accusation, should be believed. Men’s rights be damned. Presumption of innocence does not exist in her world!

Not to shy away from following up with more stupidity, she now claims that the Democratic party is just too smart and needs to talk down to us commoners in order to better connect.

I have a message for Mazie — please sit down and shut up. You’re an embarrassment at a time when Hawaii needs competence in leadership, not grandstanding.

Councilwoman goes above and beyond

I have to definitely say much mahalos to County of Hawaii District 1 Councilwoman Valerie Poindexter. Her phone number is listed in the phone book and she is always there to listen to people’s concerns. I won’t go over the case I discussed with her, but, I must admit, she has been a blessing and lifesaver to me.

I am new to the Hamakua district being that I am a Ka’u native, but Councilwoman Poindexter has been a great friend from the start and she definitely knows the real concept of aloha.

Hooked on column early

My husband and I so enjoyed reading Jody Bright’s column in Monday’s WHT. We were loyal readers of Jim Rizzuto’s column, too. We think Jody Bright is off to a great start “filling Jim’s shoes” and are glad that he is doing his own thing with the column.

Looking forward to reading the biweekly column — that is, we are hoping there will be more Bright Side columns.
