Alsarah &the Nubatones to play at the Kahilu

The internationally acclaimed Alsarah &the Nubatones make their Hawaii debut at the Kahilu Theatre at 7 p.m. Friday.

Alsarah is a singer, songwriter and bandleader. Born in Khartoum, Sudan, she relocated to Yemen with her family before abruptly moving to the U.S., feeling most at home in Brooklyn, New York, where she has been residing since 2004.

Mokuaikaua Church presents, ‘A Journey to Bethlehem: A Live Nativity Experience’

From 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Mokuaikaua Church will host “Journey to Bethlehem: A Live Nativity Experience.” This family-friendly event offers an opportunity to stroll from historical Nazareth to Bethlehem on the church grounds.

Storytelling, period costumes, live animals, Christmas carols and refreshments will engage both children and adults. This event is free and open to the entire community.

Mokuaikaua Church founded in 1820, is the first Christian church in Hawaii and located at 75-5713 Alii Drive.

Stroll through Kainaliu for the holidays

Kainaliu Kalikimaka — A Holiday Stroll is 5-8 p.m. Saturday in Kainaliu.

The event features food, live music, crafts, giveaways, kids activities, santa and fun for the whole ohana.

Waimea Community Theatre holding auditions for next play, ‘Cinderella’

Waimea Community Theatre will be holding auditions for “Cinderella.” This classic musical by Rogers &Hammerstein will be on stage March 2019.

Auditions to be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17 and 18 at NHERC in Honokaa. Know a handsome prince? Want to wear fancy clothes at the royal ball? Need a new glass slipper? Join us for all the fun.

Try your hand at indigo dyeing at Volcano Art Center

Learn the magical process of creating with nature’s oldest, natural dye, indigo on Saturday at the Volcano Art Center.

Participants may bring one to five small items of their own to dye, avoiding bulky or heavy pieces (towels, linens, yards of fabric, bedding etc.), as vat space and time are limited. Items must be cotton, linen, hemp, silk or anything natural — no synthetics, as they accept the color the best. Please pre-wash items for best result.

Class fee is $55/$50 for VAC members plus a $25 supply fee. No experience is necessary. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Make a holiday wreath with SKEA

The Society for Kona’s Education and Art hosts a holiday wreath-making workshop with Lou Winn and Susie Weaver from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Honaunau site.

Cost is $20 for SKEA members; $25 for nonmembers. Forms, pins and a basic amount of plant materials will be provided; bring clippers and other plant material or embellishments you may wish to use.

Royal Kona Harp Ensemble playing

The Royal Kona Harp Ensemble will be playing at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden from 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

The concert will feature the magic of three harps, woodwinds and orchestration in concert featuring works by JS Bach, O Carolann, Pachebel and traditional music from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, England and Hawaii.

Hula Kahiko series concludes at VAC

Volcano Art Center’s Hula Arts at Kilauea 2018 performance series concludes at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a presentation by Unuokeahi, under the direction of kumu hula Kapua Kaaua, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by the Volcano Art Center. For the series, hula halau from across Hawaii are invited to perform in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) near the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats.
