Fire destroys unit in Hilo fourplex

KAILUA-KONA — Fire officials are investigating the cause of a late Thursday structure fire that burned one unit within a fourplex in Hilo.

Hawaii Fire Department firefighters responded at 11:34 p.m. to a report of a structure fire at an apartment fourplex off Ipuka Street in Hilo. Upon their arrival at 11:40 p.m., firefighters found one unit within the single-story Lanakila Housing on fire.

All 17 occupants of the structure escaped and no injuries were reported, according to the department. Lanakila Housing is a 364-unit public housing complex.

The fire was declared out at 11:59 p.m. and all units had returned to quarters by 3:35 a.m. Friday.
