“Boat Sinks, Car Flips, ‘Grass Grows’ In Kona”

No byline

It was a busy week for Kona police, with a marijuana arrest, sunken charter vessel and an overturned automobile heading the list of items investigated.

Arrested and charged with violation of state narcotic drugs law was 23-year-old Edward Fraser Wilson, who gave his address as Honolulu. The arrest took place in the Napoopoo area on Palipoko Road. Officers Henry Silva and Robert Henriques had gone to the home to serve a bench warrant for a traffic violation. But, while on premises, the officers reportedly noticed plants they believed to be marijuana growing in a garden. Seven were arrested from two area houses, however, six — three men and three women — were released for lack of sufficient evidence.

In other action, the 42-foot charter vessel “Kumu” sank at Keauhou Bay early Friday. According to the skipper, Willard Whitlock of Kailua, the vessel had gone on the rocks at Kawaihae earlier in the week, and when Whitlock tried to make it to Honolulu to put the boat in dry dock for repairs, the vessel began taking on too much water and was forced back to Kawaihae and was later towed to Keauhou. The vessel was dry the last time Whitlock saw it about 10 p.m. the night prior.

Lastly, 19-year-old Honaunau resident Alan Estencion was taken to Kona Hospital after suffering a badly fractured left arm in a car crash on Kuakini Highway. The crash occurred as the youth was attempting to pass another car at a high rate of speed when Estencion apparently lost control of his sport compact vehicle and ended up overturned in a ditch. Estencion was charged with no operator’s license and failure to exercise due care.
