Chamber Orchestra of Kona performs holiday concert at Aloha Theatre
The Chamber Orchestra of Kona presents “Christmas Rocks at the Pops,” at 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Aloha Theater in Kainaliu.
Enjoy an hour of festive music by the 35-piece orchestra, including classic favorites from “The Nutcracker,” Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” music from the movie “Frozen” and more. The concert will include a special student performance featuring traditional Christmas carols such as “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Jingle Bells” and “Up on the Housetop.”

Act, sing and dance into spring with Prince Dance Institute
Prince Dance Institute (PDI) is offering more than 25 performing arts classes at Kahilu Theatre in Kamuela and the Honokaa Hongwanji Mission in Honokaa during its spring semester. Enrollment for classes is open now at www.princedanceinstitute.com. The semester starts Tuesday, Jan. 9 and runs weekly through Thursday, April 25.
The disciplines of dance, theatre, music and acrobatics are represented in the PDI curriculum, with classes available for all ages and skill levels. The semester concludes with the Prince Dance Institute production of “Perspektives” at Kahilu Theatre on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5.
Prince Dance Institute is also excited to welcome Erin Kawakami to its faculty. Kawakami was born and raised on the Big Island and educated in dance, both locally and on the mainland at Joffrey Ballet and Ballet West, at the University of Utah and the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Kawakami will be teaching Ballet 1, 2 and 3 for PDI.

Grace Community Church presents “Good Stuffs From Above: A Christmas Puppet Show”
Grace Community Church will be presenting a unique, one-of-a-kind Christmas puppet show at Queen Liliuokalani Village Recreation Center. This family-friendly event will be presented two evenings, at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Christmas cookies will be served following the presentation. This event is free and open to the public. Holiday tree on display at Imiloa
Imiloa Astronomy Center proudly presents its 2018 annual Holiday Tree, featuring an authentic and unique collection of paper sea creatures, expertly folded by origami artists from around the world.
Amongst the many different origami models swimming around the tree are yellow tangs, sea urchins, jellyfish, crabs, clownfish, sea horses, sea snails, crabs, baby kumu fish, angelfish, sharks, a humpback whale, a barracuda, a lot of turtles and even Hawaii’s state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapuaa. The public is invited to visit, view and enjoy taking photos of this special, one-of-a-kind holiday tree, which also showcases eight non-sea creatures that are found near the ocean.
Imiloa’s Holiday Tree is on display now through Jan. 13 in the atrium of the center at 600 Imiloa Place in Hilo in the University of Hawaii at Hilo Science &Technology Park. It’s open to the public Tuesday-Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kona church holding Christmas concert
St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kailua-Kona is hosting its second annual Christmas Classic Concert “Po Hemolele” from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 28.
Tickets are $75 per person and include pupus and wine. Some of the featured performers include Annu Sionoya, Lisa Katherine Taylor, Ursula Vietze and Bernaldo Evangelista.

WHDT students pass Ballet II pointe examination
West Hawaii Dance Theatre is pleased to announce the following students successfully completed their Ballet II pointe examination.
Pointe shoe candidates must take a minimum of three years of classical ballet technique, two to three classes per week, be at least 11 years of age and pass a physical test of proper execution of specific ballet steps. They also must pass a 100 question written examination of ballet terminology and theory.
Successful candidates for the fall 2018 semester are Elizabeth Pargett, Alexander Ruff, Karissa Pargett, Alexis Pargett, Darlene Summers, Nadia Jones, Maiya Fox, Crystal Ravelo, Reiya Lehmann, Rayna Morphis, Ailani Martinson and Mara Wallace.
