Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to perform on the Big Island
Celebrating 25 years of making music, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will perform at the Kahilu Theatre at 7 p.m. Jan. 10.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene. Since its formation in the early ‘90s in Ventura, California, the band has toured virtually nonstop, performing on average over 150 shows a year, and has produced a sizable catalog of recorded music, with sales of over 2 million albums to date.

SOKO exhibition opening reception open to the public
“Collective Synergy,” an exhibition by South Kona Artists Collective — SOKO, is a diverse art collection from the group of local artists. The public is invited to join the artists for the opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Jan. 12 at Pictures Plus in Kailua-Kona.
Inspired by the natural beauty of Hawaii, SOKO artists will be showing a wide range of art, including watercolors, photography, woven and natural fiber art, woodcut prints, ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, mosaics and sculpture. All art will be available for purchase.
The exhibition is from Jan. 12-26 at Pictures Plus, 75-1006 Henry Street, Kailua-Kona and will be open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Aloha Theatre announces education offerings for new year
Aloha Theatre is ringing in the new year with a new session of classes and workshops for all ages.
Artistic director Jerry Tracy, assisted by Kira Kane and Malia Moore, reconvenes Tuesday Troupers, a performance skills class for kids ages 8 to 12. The Troupers will meet from 3:30-5:30 p.m. each Tuesday from Jan. 15 through March 5. Tuition is $80 per student. Reading ability is required, and parents or guardians are asked to stay a few minutes for a brief introduction to the course on the first Tuesday. On the last class day, March 5, the students will present a free public half-hour showcase performance at the theatre. The theme for this session is “The Magic of Three.”
On Wednesdays, Josey Creger will continue her popular Little Theatre Club, for keiki ages 4 to 7. The club meets from 4-5 p.m. Jan. 16 through Feb. 20. Members will focus on cooperative social interaction through organized play, theatre games, and other fun stage activities. Tuition is $60 per member. Felicity Johnson leads her Intergenerational Theatre class on Thursdays from 2-4 p.m., from Jan. 17 through March 7, with a sharing performance on the final class day. Tuition is $80, and all ages are welcome.
On Fridays from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Delaney Ross heads up Aloha Teen Theatre, free of charge and open to all teenagers. ATT members learn all manner of theatre skills, and this session will focus on mounting a production of the musical “Legally Blonde, Jr.” Auditions will be held on Jan. 18, and are open to all area teenagers, whether or not they have previously been involved with ATT. Newcomers and all ethnicities are encouraged to auditon.
Sundays from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Quinton Loder will lead his fun and challenging Adult Improv Comedy workshop, which will run Jan. 6 through Feb. 24. Katy Raczkowski will lead Social Media Star Camp on Jan. 2, 3, and 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. In this camp, for ages 8 through 12, participants will learn how to become a YouTube star. On Saturday, Feb. 23, Jerry Tracy will offer Meet My Friend Harvey, a boot camp aimed at preparing actors who are interested in auditioning for Mary Chase’s classic American comedy, “Harvey.” Auditions will be held March 4 and 5, and the play takes the stage May 3-19.

Exhibition opportunities available at Kahilu
Kahilu Theatre is pleased to announce two exhibition opportunities for visual artists. The first is an invitation to submit a proposal to be an exhibiting artist in the 39th Kahilu Presenting Season, which will take place September 2019 through August 2020. Exhibitions are open for solo or group shows in any visual medium, and from local, national or internationally based artists or artist groups. The deadline for submission is Feb. 8, 2019. Proposals will be reviewed through the Café website application process.
The second opportunity is to participate in Kahilu Theatre’s Annual Juried Exhibit that will take place this spring. “Transformative Forces: Creation through Destruction” invites artists to submit work that explores the dual forces of creation and destruction shaping our lives and the world around us. The Kahilu Exhibits program is currently accepting proposals from Hawaii based artists through the Café website application process. The deadline for submission is Feb. 15. First, second and third place awards will be announced at the opening reception on March 14. The juried exhibit runs from March 14 through April 28.
