KAILUA-KONA — A brush fire in Kaloko burned 30 acres of land on Friday, the Hawaii Fire Department said.
The department also said there were no injuries as a result of the fire, which led to the evacuation of 24 units at The Homes at Ulu Wini.
The first units arrived to the scene on Kauhola Street, south of Hina Lani Street, at 2:11 p.m., where responders found the fire about half an acre in size buring in open land.
The fire continued to burn, the department said, and expanded to 30 acres before being contained and extinguished. In addition to four engines and other HFD units, firefighters were also assisted by water drops with a helicopter and a bull dozer to create a firebreak.
The fire was reported out at 5:30 p.m. While hot spots continued to smolder inside the fire break, the fire department said, units remained on scene to keep watch over the area throughout the night.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
