“Christmas Money For West Hawaii” No byline

Gov. John Burns, all decked out in his Santa suit, dropped a special Christmas bundle in West Hawaii this past week in the form of a capital improvement’s budget for the fiscal year 1970.

Major West Hawaii projects listed in the budget are: $5 million for Keahole Airport construction programs; $1.9 million for Honokohau Small Boat Harbor dredging and improvements; $1.3 million for water supply from Honokohau to Keahole Airport; $1.6 million for a road from Kailua to Kawaihae; $750,000 for water in the South Kohala area; $260,000 for a Kealakekua Bay Park, $575,000 for building, driveway and construction projects at the new Kealakehe School; and $388,000 for plans, classroom buildings and an administration building at Waimea Elementary and Intermediate School. Total Big Island expenditures were listed at approximately $13 million.

“Kona New Year To Open With A ‘Bang’”

The new year will open with a bang in Kona tonight as some $600 worth of fireworks herald the arrival of 1969. The gala midnight fireworks display will be cosponsored by Kona Inn, Kona Hilton and King Kamehameha hotels. The display, including 200 large fireworks, will originate from the Kailua Pier with personnel from each of the hotels participating. The display is expected to last 20 minutes.
